I Am Deaf so What?

I lost my hearing since I was 6 ½ years old due to a disease called meningitis and by the time I recovered it was almost a year. I visited doctors one after the other include the local wise woman who specialized in magic of some sort. None of the Doctor with their golden framed degree hanging proudly on their walls nor the Hocus Pocus of the wise woman could bring back my hearing.

As a result life took its course and by the time I was seven years old I was sent to a special school for the deaf. My first day there I was so scared due to the new changes in my environment, I was not accustomed to children of this sort. They were seen moving their hands in the air and everywhere left and right, in circles and along their sides while they communicate in Sign Language. I ran away as fast as I could all the way back home before them, Kung Fu or Karate me to pieces or so I thought at that time.

At home my Mom looked kind of cross and although I couldn’t hear a word she was saying I know she was upset about me fleeing the school. After some unkind face expression, wagging of fingers and verbal language which I couldn’t hear include some slap on the bottom of my pants. I decided I won’t make my Mom mad any more.

As the years go by and I moved from Primary School to High School and grew into a miserable teenage boy, who portrayed a mean expression on his face and was always ready to do battle with anyone who tried to enforce control or power issues over me. My friends were mostly myself and books so you could say I am a loner or a person who prefer his own company.

I have always had an interest in girls but my only problem was I didn’t know how to speak with them. I thought I needed some special language to associate with the opposite sex. Whenever a beautiful female approaches me, I would find an excuse to be distance away from them.

Until one day I found two books in a Public Library, entitled “How to win friends and Influence people” and “How to make your own Luck”, these books become my personal bible and I read them every day for over a year and they were the turning point of my life. Through these books I learn what to do and say to a female, how to obtain a date and conquer fear. The book “How to win friends and Influence people”, gave me the knowhow, the other book “How to make your own luck”, gave me the action habit, eg Idea + Action = Results, however some cases calls for Idea + Planning + Action = Results.

I have been employing these strategies through the year with every obstacle or problems I encounter in my daily life and have been successful. Now I am not a person who loves to brag about myself.

Being a deaf person no longer bother me and I am not so concerned about who like or love me. I just live life and let it goes on with its course in whatever way it see fit.

Normal people can hear a variety of tones and a deaf person don’t hear in range of tones. With the deaf it all depends on a variety of communication factors, whether the deaf understand, such as the ringing of a phone, a knock at the door or thunder above.

You would be surprised to know that if you were to ask a deaf individual if they would like to hear again. Their response would be a big NO, and they may even seem scared. This is a bit difficult to explain, but suppose I was to ask you would you love to become deaf. What would your reaction be? You would probably make for the exit, after all, being normal in your opinion should make you superior. I guess the deaf persons are all comfortable with who they are and so they wouldn’t wish to be anyone else, just as normal individual are comfortable with themselves.

Being deaf is not a big issue beside of having a verbal communication with a phone, listening to the radio or listen to noise coming from next door. With today changing environment and the rise of Computers and several new Technology. A deaf person can operate in almost everyday life just as a normal person without feeling like a handicap, a weak sissy or a bother. Many have learned to do almost any things that the majority of normal people can do, so in my opinion being deaf is alright.
