Learn How To Be Coachable

Once we attain a certain position or level at work, many of us start thinking that we've already achieved so much to the point that we've become experts at what we do. Some might think that this means that they are always right and that they know much more than any other person. While being in a higher position does mean that you have more skills and experience than other people, that doesn't exempt you from continuing to learn something new. Holding a higher position at work actually means that you need to work harder to stay at the top so you deserve to be where you are.

This means that you need to learn how to be coachable. Coaching is one of the important steps you can take to bring your career to another level, or even just to learn something new about yourself and prepare yourself to develop new skills. If you are going to undergo coaching, however, you need to get rid of any ideas you have about your knowledge and skill level, and acknowledge that you may be starting from scratch and that you still have a lot to learn.

That's basically the main thing about becoming more coachable—you need to be more humble. You might think that you already know everything there is to know about your job and industry. If you persist in thinking that way, then you really won't be able to accept the new lessons you're supposed to be learning because it might sound like you're being taught something that you don't need to learn anymore. It helps to remember that you do not know everything yet and that you might pick up something different along the way.

You definitely need to be open to learning new things, not just in terms of, say, new software or new methods you could use. While undergoing coaching, you may find that you would need to readjust the way you think and approach a project. Rather than just rigidly sticking to the way you've been doing things for a while, it's a good idea to give new approaches a chance. Consider it a way for you to keep moving forward and develop a different working style that might end up producing better results.

Being coachable also means seeking feedback from others. You want to make sure that you are picking up the right lessons and applying them correctly. Learning to become more coachable can be a challenge, but you should see this as an opportunity to stretch your skills further and constantly finding ways to improve rather than just getting stuck with one approach.
