Security In Life Is An Illusion

Security is an illusion unless you create your own.

If you are one of those people in life who desires security than you have company. Most people are driven by some degree to have stability in more than one part of their lives.

Security in your employment or cash flow, security in your relationships with others, security in having a place to call home and a reliable source of sustenance or food.

Having stability in your life because all the important things are well balanced can provide an incredible amount of security, happiness and even contentment to any individual.

If one area is upended it can be the stability in other areas that keeps life’s boat afloat. A financial stress can seem less daunting, for example, if we have the security of a loving relationship to lean on. By the same token, an unstable relationship can cause people to bury themselves in the security of the work routine.

Security, to me, promotes a stress free life. One thing I have learned though is that security is an illusion unless you create your own.

There is a well-known saying that goes “If it is to be, it’s up to me”. Motivational speakers, who are encouraging people to achieve more, follow their dreams and lead dynamic lives often tout this.

I am not advocating that people lead an insular, self-supported life with no reliance on or need for others. Perhaps quite the contrary.

I have been largely supported by my husband while raising our children for many years.

What I have come to realize is that I need to be in the place of calm, strength and self-reliance. Regardless of experiences in life I know that I am capable of coping and making well thought out decisions that will maintain the stability of my life.

I do this largely by drawing on my NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programing Training) and other trainings.

  • Remaining positive
  • Being calm
  • Releasing negative emotions surrounding situations
  • Becoming aware of and challenging my limiting beliefs about myself and others
  • Finding what I need to learn from a situation
  • Owning my own ‘stuff’ and not taking on other people’s problems as my own
  • Saying ‘no’ if I believe the situation will be stressful to me

These are just ideas off the top of my head while thinking of this subject. It’s not a firm list and there are other excellent strategies people use too.

My point is to always be growing, learning and setting boundaries. Find out what works for you to maintain that calm and secure space in your life.

The sea of life is not always smooth sailing but while ever you’re in the boat you have a choice on how to rig the sail and what direction you’re heading.

Security is an illusion unless you create your own.

I agree with you that we need to take our own action if we want to have a sense of security in life, be it in the form of relationships, emotional or financial aspects. However for me I find it hard 'not taking on other people’s problems as my own' when the other people are my family members.. It's so difficult saying no when clearly they need help even if I can't assist due to my own situation. How do you overcome this when it happens?

I'm not sure if that question is rhetorical or not, Ai Hoon, but it sure makes me think about lots of things I'd like to say! Think I need to write an article tonight about just this issue! Thanks for reading and I'm glad you shared your comment.

The support of a Loved one can go a long way to creating a feeling of security. When things go pear shaped, and the world appears at its end, it is this support system that reminds one of the "if its to be. its up to me". Great article.
