Beat the Bladder Blues While Being Pregnant

When you feel a burning sensation down there, you may have a urinary tract infection so you should have it checked out. This is common in pregnancy and also treatable.

Some of us have to imagine this feeling, others know it very well. When you go to the loo and your urine burns like fire, and you struggle to squeeze out a few drops at a time. You may feel feverish, your lower back and sides ache, and your bladder feel like it might burst at any time. To no surprise it is estimated that up to 80% of women have had, or will still have at least one bladder infection during their lifetime.

The facts about urinary tract infections are as follows. It is a bacterial infection in your urinary tract, the system comprising the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. The ureters are the tubes leading from your kidneys to your bladder. And the urethra is the tubes leading from the bladder to the outside. Being pregnant and having a growing baby increases your risk of getting urinary tract infection. This is a terrible discomfort, but what can you do about it and what can you do to prevent it?

The bacteria that cause urinary tract infection are normally present in the body, but they sometimes do go where they should not, and then they reproduce. In this case they reproduce to be the bladder causing infection, cystitis. This infection then moves up to the kidneys through the ureters. The bad bacteria travel much more easily and quickly to the kidneys as we have a shorter urethra.

Urinary tract infections are especially common amongst woman during the first trimester of pregnancy due to all the hormonal changes. This is when progesterone particularly increases. This causes swelling around the bladder and the urethra, and softens the bladder lining. Then the expanding uterus squeezes the bladder, this causes irritation and decreases emptying of the bladder. All these combined causes ideal conditions for bacteria to thrive in.

Urinary tract infection may be accompanied by a number of symptoms like vomiting, nausea, unpleasant smelling, bloody or colored urine and even if really severe incontinence. Although everyone does not have these severe symptoms, just go for routine urine tests. One of the most common symptoms is the sudden onset of nausea, and if you have not been experiencing morning sickness, and you suddenly feel extremely nauseous, go and see your healthcare professional.

Prevention is better than cure. Your hormonal changes are not negotiable; there are some simple guidelines that can help you to prevent getting urinary tract infection.

Do not use bubble bath, perfumed oils and bath salts or any soap on your genital area. Using just clean water is sufficient. You can scent your bath with a few drops of oils that are safe during pregnancy such as lavender, neroli or mandarin essential oils. These are relaxing, antibacterial and healing. But do this only after the first trimester is over. You can also cut back on eating acid-causing foods like citrus fruit, tomatoes, caffeine and sugar. Refrain from wearing tight, synthetic leggings, pantyhose and underwear. Intercourse is also one thing that can cause irritation, always make sure to use enough lubricant, and empty your bladder afterwards. Long hot baths disturbs pH balance and can cause skin irritation, the same goes for long periods of swimming and wearing wet clothes. When you do swim or bathe, make it quick and dry it off immediately afterwards.

There are cases that despite taking these precautions, you still get the dreaded urinary tract infection. In case you suspect that you already have an infection, you may want to visit your doctor as it is essential for you to go on antibiotics, but it is not bad news, there is still a lot you can do to speed up your recovery and to ease the symptoms safely.

Time is the one thing that cannot be over-emphasized. Time is of the essence, if you suspect you have an infection starting, begin home treatment immediately. There are various easy ways you can treat your urinary tract infection without any medication. Easy ways and tips ease and even prevent and cure your bladder blues. Good luck.

Every single day holds the possibility of a miracle.
