If you were expecting a baby girl, would you consider naming her Adele? It is a beautiful name, but your daughter would have a lot to live up to. Adele, of course, is a singer whose song "Set Fire to the Rain" is currently a top 10 song on the pop chart. As your daughter grows up, people might expect her to pursue a singing career, following in the footsteps of the famous person who shares her name. They might be waiting to see her do a concert at school and wondering if they might see her on "American Idol".
Of course, just because she shares her name with a famous person does not mean that she has to do what that person does. She can be whatever she wants to be. She can be a singer if she wants to. She can also be a teacher who gets students excited about learning, a doctor who performs life-saving surgeries, an award-winning writer who has published many best-selling books and who tours the country, speaking at schools; a game show host, or anything else she chooses to be.
The really great thing about having a unique name is that when the teacher calls your name during roll call, you should be the only one to answer to that name. When you go out, and someone who knows you sees you and calls your name, you should be the only one to turn around. A person with a common name often faces the embarrassment of being one of several people to turn around when someone calls his name. When he learns that the person who called his name was not talking to him, he may turn red, be very embarrassed, and wish that he could disappear. If he is at a restaurant, he may want to crawl under the table and wait until his face is back to its normal color. If he is at a grocery store, he may want to disappear into the restroom. He may also laugh it off, say, "Oops! Somebody else, not me!", and then go on with his business. This is the best way to handle this situation. Embarrassing moments happen all the time. While they are very embarrassing at the time, you get over them and then go on with your life.
A name is very important, because you carry it your whole life. If you are expecting a child, be very careful which name you choose. Pick several names that you like. Look up their meanings. Consider the nicknames that come from these names. Consider how they sound with your surname. Finally, consider how a child with this name would feel while growing up. If you would feel alright with this name, yur child would likely be comfortable with it. If you would hate it and want to change it, go with a different name. Once you have settled on a name that you like, you can continue your preparations for bringing a new person into the world.
Name choosing a difficult thing to do. So many books and so much pressure to get it right. We chose from the heart a name we liked and gave no consideration to anything else.
