Cope With Labor – Breathe In… Breathe Out…

I am writing this today because this is something I really needed to do when I was in labor. I did not know all about the breathing to cope with labor, it is really simple and powerful. Apparently this is one of the most profound ways to manage your labor.

Here are some facts that I bet you did not know about, pregnant women require a lot more oxygen during pregnancy, which necessitates a lot of increase in the amount of air being inhaled and exhaled in one breathing cycle. We should try to breathe more deeply, and not more frequently. It is called the breathe of life for a reason, you can live without water for about three days, and without food for about seven days, but without breath for only about seven minutes. Breath is life.

Breathing is something we do automatically, but we can also control it. One of those amazing things we do. Our breathing patterns can tell a lot about what we are doing, when we do hard work or exercise, we breathe hard and fast. We breathe deeply and slowly when we rest or relax. When we have challenges that seem hard, like labor, we tend to change the natural flow of our breathing by holding our breath, restricting normal respiratory movements. This is totally wrong. This is exactly what we should work on.

For many years breathing exercises and techniques has been taught to women in labor. The current trend is to use relaxed, natural breathing. Deep slow breaths, following the movements of your body and lungs, conscious breathing awareness.

Your breath impacts your birth. Let me tell you something else first, my husband walks into the room while I wrote that line about breath that impacts birth, and he said that “what would it matter what your breath smells like, the baby won’t mind. You know he does come out right by your poop hole, he would not mind your breath at all.” I laughed so hard I nearly fell off the chair. To get back to what I was saying, your breath does impact your birth. Not what it smells like, but your breathing. The link between your body and your mind is your breathe. This can help to focus your mind and to relax your body.

Your breath is with you constantly, there is no cost to you to use it, it is a powerful innate tool for labor. I have heart some older women say that your breath opens the pathway for you to access your body’s wisdom. Your breathing can release your body’s relaxation response within about forty seconds.

You can turn an unnerving situation into the opposite within the blink of an eye. Wrong breathing does generate disturbance and cues the nervous system to release stress response in labor and tension, this makes pain levels soar through the roof. You can also use your breathing to increase your focus, your mindfulness and presence.

Every single day holds the possibility of a miracle.
