For IVF donors, there is not usually a concern except for themselves. Yet for IVF clinics and the expecting recipient mothers of these eggs there is a new evolution taking shape that is putting more emphasis on genetic selection. In the end this process may mean that clinics have to be even choosier on the candidates selected for donation. This in turn could start increasing IVF costs or creating boutique IVF clinics tailored to the extreme choice of child genetics.
PGD
PGD stands for pre-implantation genetic diagnosis which is often done in connection and addition to IVF. The process is one of ultimate selection for new parents. During the process, a cell is removed from the egg and specifically tested for or screened for specific abnormalities or genetic markers for disease. These could consist of testing for cystic fibrosis, Down syndrome, chromosomal abnormalities or other genetic defects. There are a total of about 130 genetically inheritable diseases that can be tested for in the embryo before the IVF treatment. This is the ultimate ability to ensure a healthy baby for the new parents in today’s medical science.
Increasing Success
One of the primary benefits of PGD, besides the possibility of screening for hereditary diseases is the ability of doctors to look at the makeup of embryos and help determine why some couples are unsuccessful at conceiving. In this way it actually helps increase conception rates for those couples involved in IVF. By completing the testing before the actual IVF therapy, couples can save thousands of dollars on IVF that may have a higher risk of failure. In the end the couple is able to decide if they want to take the risk or not.
Future of PGD
There is currently a lot of hype and concern over the future of PGD, because of its future possibilities of being able to pick certain genes, the baby’s gender and other aspects that enable the ability to ‘create’ your own perfect baby. Imagine being able to choose a red-haired, blue-eyed, six foot male child from the outset. Although the ability to choose your perfect child is far from the current science is able to perform there are still ethical concerns about the process. For now, most parents are comfortable with being able to screen for genetic diseases and the gender of their child. In most current cases, parents choose children to round out their current family, as in choosing a boy baby to round out the three daughters they already have. For those that donate eggs this process may eventually weed you out of the candidate selection process depending on the genetic disease history of your family, that before now was not known, but with this process is clearly established. For now, being an egg donor is still a great way to help out families with infertility issues.
Donate eggs to those that are less fortunate is a noble endeavor, one that more US young females need to consider. If you are based in Colorado, you may visit the following website:Donating Eggs In Colorado
