Going Home With Your Precious Premature Baby

When all the hard and trying times are over. When the distance between the two of you come to an end and overcoming the breastfeeding difficulties. After you have come over the shock of your tiny baby, and when you have stopped experiencing the emotional rollercoaster. When you have done all the skin to skin contact with your baby and you see the benefits and success you achieve, and when you have overcome all the feeding issues you are ready to take your precious premature baby home.

To be able to take your baby home after weeks or months in the hospital is a really exciting time.

The amount of time that your little treasure has to spend in hospital after a premature birth is dependent on his condition, growth and health. Generally premature babies are discharged once they reach their actual due date of delivery. But they must also be able to breathe on their own, to be able to feed on his own without any problems, either by breast or bottle. Your baby should be able to sustain his own body temperature, and when there are no serious medical conditions.

This is a momentous occasion, you may even feel a bit overwhelmed, but you have learned so much about your preterm baby, and how to care for him with all your visits to him in hospital that you are well equipped to cope on your own and to care for him.

You can greatly benefit from the routine that your baby got in hospital, you can use the same routine at home to make it all easier and better for you and your baby. This is something that your baby got in hospital that you can also be grateful for. To keep your baby to the same routine will make it all and the transition easier for both of you.

Get yourself an apnoea monitor and use it. This is a monitor that sets off an alarm in case your baby stops breathing for 20 seconds while lying in bed.

Your little treasures immune system is still underdeveloped and he will still need a lot of help and as little germs as possible. Get all your visitors to wash their hands before they touch your little baby, and try not to allow anyone to visit while they are sick. This is not because you are a bad person; you are simply protecting your baby. Everyone would want to touch and even hold him, make sure you protect him as much as possible. It is true that babies should not be locked in glass cages, and should be exposed to germs for their immune systems to become strong and well developed, but your premature baby is different. Protect him at all times.

Your baby has become used to the lights and noise in the hospital; therefore you have no need to confine him to a quiet dark room. It is also an advantage to you when your baby can sleep soundless with light and noise around. Always remember when you visit clinics or doctors with your baby, even just for routine checkups, always let them know that your baby was born prematurely. Tell them exactly at what number of weeks he was born, what his actual size and weight was as well as his corrected age and his current weight. This helps your health care professionals to spot and diagnose any problems your baby might have that you would want to know about rather earlier than later.

There are so much more help and information to be given and received on premature little treasures, too much to put into one article, therefore I have done 4 installments of all the help I have to give for now. This article is part 3 of 4 parts to look out for. Enjoy reading it all and let me know if you have any further questions or anything I can help with to make your experience with your premature baby more enjoyable and memorizing for the both of you.

Every single day holds the promise of a miracle.
