How to Introduce A Bottle to Your Breastfed Baby

I have received many mails from first time moms about getting their babies to take the bottle as well while they are exclusively breastfeeding. After a few months of exclusively breastfeeding, you do need some time to yourself. Expressed milk in a bottle is a good way to get some time to yourself, but it is not always easy to get your baby to take the bottle.

When you try to give your baby the bottle yourself, he sees your face and this can confuse him. He gets confused because he sees your face but does not get your breast, his association of your face with the breast and his food is not right. It is then better to give the bottle to someone else, like the baby’s daddy to give to the baby. This way you eliminate your baby’s confusion, and thus make it easier for him to take the bottle. You can also try to give him the bottle earlier than his normal feed time. He will be hungry enough to take the bottle, but not too hungry to get frustrated.

If your baby still refuses the bottle, you can put some of your breast milk on the teat of the bottle. This way your baby will smell your milk, and taste it right away when he takes the teat taste.

Another thing you can try to get him to take the teat is to warm it up a little in warm water. This way you soften the teat, making it more natural. If he does play with the teat, just let him. The playing might even turn into some suckling in a little while.

If your baby cries and is upset, just try to calm him down first, and then give him the bottle. You can try this for three times in a row, not more at any time. When he is crying, he wil absolutely definitely refuse the bottle, and if he still has not calmed down then wait about ten minutes before giving him the breast. This will keep him from getting into the habit of refusing the bottle and straight away getting the breast. A habit like this would make it much harder for you to get him to take the bottle.

There are something else you can consider, this is that you can try a cup. Give your baby some of your expressed milk from a cup. Feeding your baby from a cup has advantages. It does not interfere with his suckling at the breast, and cleaning a cup is easy. Even when you feed your baby from a cup, you are still holding him, this is a great way to get in some physical contact with your baby.

Breast milk is the best you can give your baby for the first six months. At about six months of age he starts to outgrow the breast milk supply, he will start to need other nutrients. This is the best time to start him on solids. Breast milk is no longer enough by itself to meet all your baby’s nutritional needs. Although breast milk continues to be your baby’s main source of food, you can start with pureed food.

Every single day holds the promise of a miracle.
