My Pegnancy Test Was Positive

It is said that around the world every second 3 babies are born. It is little wonder that the question "My pregnancy test was positive... what next?", is commonly asked by thousands every day. What do you feel right now? Excited, anxious, ecstatic, confused, all of the above? You are not alone in how you feel. However, just like every child entering the world is unique, this pregnancy and the journey that's just unfolding is as unique. There are some immediate next steps to be considered when you first find out that your pregnancy test was positive. In this article we will discuss these. There will also be decisions to be made. I will draw your attention to the most salient of these.

Your pregnancy test was positive - what do you do next?

If you used a home pregnancy kit, the first thing that you probably should do is to take the test again, particularly if the confirmation line was faint. These kits usually come with two test strips. Of course your intuition coupled with a positive first test should be accurate. False positives however, are not uncommon.

Once confirmed you may choose to see your family doctor, who will run a series of tests. The doctor will discuss options for your antenatal care and refer you to a relevant health care provider. Alternatively you may schedule an appointment with an antenatal clinic as your test is confirmed. In which case your first appointment will be towards the end of the first trimester. At this appointment your antenatal care provider will run urine and blood tests and discuss your medical and family medical histories.

This initial period is when you begin to experience hormonal surges as your body adjusts to being pregnant. You may or may not feel any early pregnancy 'symptoms'. You may not look very different, however it is quite common to experience nausea, tiredness and changes to your breasts as they get heavier and more sensitive.

Not everyone experiences these feelings in the same way. In fact if you have been pregnant before you will soon realise that this pregnancy is different to the last. Nausea associated with pregnancy is often referred to as 'morning sickness'. This is apparently a misnomer as you can feel queasy around the clock. There are some people who never experience this or it is limited to a few days, unfortunately others carry this well into their pregnancy.

As for feeling tired, it is best to be mindful of how you feel and rest as often as you need. If you are used to being on the go this is a good time to get used to relaxing whenever you get the opportunity. This will be a useful 'skill' to acquire as the next few years, particularly after baby is born can be a very exhausting time.

Your pregnancy test was positive - now it's decision time.

The exciting times ahead calls for lots of planning and decision making. Let's briefly look at some aspects that require special attention at this stage.

  • Decide on your health care provider. Will you opt to be cared at a public clinic or by a private obstetrician? The cost implications will have to be balanced with your means and special requirements. An obstetrician for instance would be a good idea if your medical history is complicated or you are an older mother. Find out from friends and family what worked best for them. Feel free to 'shop' around till you find the right fit.
  • When will you break the news to the world? Your parents and children would probably be informed earlier than your friends and workplace. Generally news of pregnancy is shared in the second trimester. Having said that this is a very personal decision, which is completely up to you.
  • Finances is as an aspect that you will need to discuss and factor in with your partner. Needless to say having a baby (the first in particular) entails a significant monetary outlay.
  • Pregnancy brings with it its own set of challenges. Therefore, keeping major life changes to a minimal is a good idea. Changes to residence and jobs at this time should be avoided. If such changes are planned it's best to carry them out as soon as possible or to wait till around a year after the baby's birth.

Congratulations your pregnancy test was positive! The true test lies ahead. Learn as much as you can about what you can expect in the coming months. At this time knowledge is your best friend. A good book will provide an excellent starting point. There are many 'pregnancy bibles' out there. Investing in one is strongly recommended. My website features some, which in my experience are the top picks of the best pregnancy books on the market.
