Precious Premature Babies

It is sad, heartbreaking, but also a blessing in more ways that you may know. Here are a few things you can expect with your preterm baby, and I will also show you what makes your little treasure so special.

When your baby is unexpectedly early, it can be quite traumatic. You will be scared and overwhelmed. This is all very real emotions for many moms. The percentage of premature babies born every year continues to grow. The special care and technology devoted to these tiny little treasures gives them a big chance of survival.

The facts about prematurity. Premature babies are babies born at 37 weeks or younger. Premature babies have a better chance of survival as from 26 weeks or older. But every day increases the survival rate of a preterm baby; every day that he is longer in the womb gives him a much greater chance of survival. There are cases when a premature baby is not determined by weeks but by birth weight. Babies born with a birth weight of 2500grams or less is considered to have a low birth weight, but babies born with a birth weight of 1000 grams or less is considered to have an extremely low birth weight.

One of the main causes of premature babies is late or no antenatal care. Medical conditions also cause preterm babies, like multiple pregnancy, blood pressure, diabetes and abnormalities of the uterus. There are other causes such as stress, which is linked to lifestyle and environment. A low birth weight among babies can be caused by smoking and alcohol use during pregnancy.

Your tiny baby, his size and the sight of his fragile little body would come as a shock to you. They are so tiny; you might even think to yourself that you won’t even be able to hold him. He is perfect, with all the perfect parts of a normal baby, ten little fingers, ten little toes, just really small. Preterm babies lack the subcutaneous fat that basically fills babies out in the few weeks before birth. To you it may even seem that his head is out of proportion to the rest of his tiny body, and his skin may have a funny reddish or transparent color.

Your premature baby will be taken to intensive care and placed in an incubator for warmth; at this stage your tiny baby cannot regulate his own body temperature just yet. And to put him in an incubator, he is being kept safe from germs and infections as well. A feeding tube will be inserted through his nose or mouth, and he will probably need to be connected to a ventilator to help him breath. His heart rate, breathing and blood pressure will also be monitored with a cardio-respirator.

All the medical equipment attached to and around your tiny little treasure can be daunting, but just think and remember that your little treasure is in the best hands. These nurses are angels; they will also teach you how to hold your tiny baby and how to look after him. Being separated from your baby is probably the hardest part of all this and depending on his size and state it might be a while before you are able to see and hold him. Even though it may be really difficult for you, just know and remember that your baby is in the best possible hands.

This is only the first part of two articles on premature babies, there is so much info and help to give on this subject that I thought it best to give it all in two parts. Hope you enjoy reading this and that it all helps you to cope with your premature little treasure.

Every single day holds the promise of a miracle.
