Pregnancy And Medical Conditions Part 3 – Asthma

Chronic medical conditions does not have to be a balancing act, there are many ways to deal with asthma and to manage being pregnant together with an asthma condition. You may experience a bit of a balancing act with the special diets, extra exercise, the medications you have to take and the medical monitoring. May feel that it is a bit much and that you have a lot going on in your life, may feel complicated to add pregnancy on top of it all. All this you have going on does not have to get the better of you; there are many ways you can deal with all these combined conditions.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of your airways. This causes recurrent coughing, wheezing, breathlessness and chest tightness. There are studies that show that pregnancy can have different effects on an asthma condition. Most of the time your condition stays the same, some get worse and some actually may see some improvement.

You can manage your asthma the best by getting it under control before you fall pregnant. You can find out from your medical professional on medication you can use while being pregnant, and get advice on how to avoid an attack.

The risk of miscarriage, low birth weight and intrauterine growth restrictions are increased with poorly controlled asthma. Although there is good news as asthma medication does not have a negative impact on fetal health, especially the inhalers. Therefore you can breathe easily and deeply.

A good idea would be to find out what your asthma triggers are, and then try to avoid them at all costs while pregnant. Common triggers include cigarette smoke, pollen, dust and certain food additives. You can also exercise a little with care, and try your best to avoid getting sick, therefore stay away from sick people. It might also be a good idea to get a flu jab before you fall pregnant, but in case that is not possible you can have this in you second trimester as well.

When you do have an attack, treat yourself with your usual medication but go to your nearest casualty to get checked out immediately to make sure you and your baby does not get short changed of oxygen. There is no reason why you could not have a natural labor and deliver naturally when you manage you asthma well. Although it would be a good idea to just stick to a hospital birth, as you asthma can be controlled in case it worsens during labor. These asthma flare ups are rare in childbirth, but they do occur so take your normal medication during labor.

Most women find that after delivery, within about three months, their symptoms return to what it was before pregnancy.

Asthma can be treated and there is no reason for you not to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy strong baby while you are an asthma sufferer.

Every single day holds the possibility of a miracle.
