Staying Fit During Pregnancy

You don't have to "let go of yourself" when you become pregnant. Staying fit during pregnancy doesn’t have to be hard. With just a few simple exercises that you can do at home and eating a balanced diet, you can still look fit and feel fit during those nine months.

Many first-time pregnant women think that becoming pregnant can mean eating whatever they want. That was the case for me. I assumed that I needed to eat for “two”, so I would have an extra helping during every meal. In general, most women only need an additional 300 calories per day, which isn’t much at all if you think about it. Just eating a cup of cottage cheese with a handful of raisins or an extra piece of wheat toast with peanut butter will give you that extra caloric intake necessary for your growing baby. Eating for two is a common misconception for pregnancy because this just leads to over eating which can result in excessive weight gain or additional problems like gestational diabetes or high blood pressure.

Of course, it is necessary to gain weight during pregnancy. Pregnancy isn’t the time to go on a diet, but it can be the time to go on a balanced diet. Diet isn’t about starving yourself at meals. It means being selective with what you eat and portion control. Honestly if you are craving fries at McDonalds for lunch, then go ahead and have it. Just make sure that with those fries, you have a side of vegetables and lean protein like baked chicken or tilapia. By no means am I promoting processed fast foods, but I don’t think a side of fries is going to harm your baby. Staying fit during pregnancy requires you to eat a balanced diet, but succumbing to food cravings now and then is normal during pregnancy. Portion control is also a key factor – you wouldn’t want to eat just vegetables all day even though veggies are good for you. Everything should be in moderation.

As with eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly is great on the body. Plus staying fit during pregnancy with daily exercise and staying active can potentially help you during childbirth. Some studies have shown that women who work out on a regular basis helped them with shorter labor and more energy during labor. As a mom of two, I know that when it’s time to push the baby out, it requires a ton of energy to push with all your might. It can be very exhausting especially if you have endured a long active labor.

Exercising doesn’t mean you have to get a gym membership or join an expensive yoga class. It could simply be walking around your neighborhood a couple times and doing some light stretching. You can buy inexpensive 3 pound or 5 pound weights and do some arm exercises as well. I did arm exercises every chance I got while I watched television or if I was just lounging on the couch with my feet up because I wanted to avoid flabby arms or also known as lunch lady arms! Staying fit during pregnancy really equates to eating right but also exercising.

Pregnancy is a beautiful and exciting time. Staying fit during pregnancy can make it that much more enjoyable. It can also benefit you post-pregnancy because you will already be used to eating a healthy diet as well as exercising.

I am a lunch lady and I find the "lunch lady arms" comment a little rude. That's a stereotype we are trying to squash. We are wives and mothers just like the rest of the work force and guess what - of all 10 women I work with, not one of us has flabby arms. Why couldn't the sentence just stop at the flabby arms? You didn't need to compare it to a certain type of hard-working woman (who probably works a hell of a lot harder than those desk jobbers) to make the point.

Great advice, thank you. I did the same as you suggest here, and I did not gain one ounce during my whole pregnancy. It was great, this stuff really works.
