Taking Care Of Your Teeth During Pregnancy

Let’s have some teeth talk. By now you know that you and an increased amount of blood and hormones surging through your body when you are pregnant. This has an effect on your organs and soft tissue areas, including your mouth and your gums. These become softer, more swollen and more sensitive than it normally does. For this reason they are more likely to become inflamed and infected easily. This is the one time in your life, even if you do hate going to the dentist that you must rather go sooner than later. You might not even thing it can be a problem at all, it definitely can and you must visit your dentist to rather be sure than sorry.

There are ways and means that you can use to minimise any problems you experience with your teeth and gums while you are pregnant. Let’s have a look at a few of the things you can do.

  • You can brush and floss more than usual, and a bit longer too. Brush and floss after every meal. You are doing this because bacteria, saliva and small remains of food cause dental plaque. This tends to become more of a problem in pregnancy.
  • Use a mouth wash or brush your teeth after every time you experience nausea and vomiting. This is to rid your mouth from harmful acids in your stomach content.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste, and get yourself a toothbrush with softer bristles. Harder bristles can more easily break the skin on your gums, therefor giving infections a chance to creep in.
  • You can get yourself toothpaste that is specifically designed for sensitive gums, and then rather use this when your gums are extremely sensitive.
  • You must cut way down on sweets, biscuits and carbonated high sugar drinks. There are more advantages to doing this than just your teeth and gums. It is better and healthier for you and your baby, and also keeps your weight in check, these contribute greatly to tooth decay and gum problems. Rather eat foods rich in Vitamin C, which is good for your gums. Then also eat calcium rich foods, this is especially good for you teeth.
  • Get yourself an antiseptic mouthwash, and then rinse your mouth with it often. Do this at least three times a day.
  • Make your fist appointment with your dental hygienist early in your pregnancy, early in the first trimester. This way you can ensure you have healthy teeth and gums by sorting any problems out early. Then have at least one appointment again in the second and third trimester to check that everything is still in order.

There are times when you have to worry, but when is this? When your gums are inflamed, it could be a sign of the condition called gingivitis. When this is left unchecked it could lead to a periodontal disease. Then if a periodontal disease is left unchecked, it could have a huge effect on you, but also on your unborn baby. Therefor you have to get checked out rather sooner than later.

You can look out for the following signs of a periodontal disease.

- When you do floss and brush regularly, but you still have a constant bad breath. - When your teeth are sensitive to temperature or touch or when your teeth are loose. - When you chew and it is painful or uncomfortable. - When your gums are often overly sensitive, and when your gums are red and swollen. - A certain amount of bleeding can be expected when you brush or floss, but it should not be too much. Your teeth and gums are then more susceptible to irritation and infection.

For the above reasons some us just stop flossing and brushing. We seem to think that doing these will make it worse. This is just the opposite of what is true. This is a good reason to consult your dental hygienist when the bleeding and pain continues, despite the fact that you are doing all of the above and taking care of your gums and teeth.

Always remember to remind your dentist that you are pregnant when you receive any treatments. There are some treatments that should be avoided and only be done after your baby is born. Unless you suffer from some sort of dental trauma. Conditions like an abscess or broken teeth should get fixed straight away.

Avoid dental X-rays, except if there is an urgent need that cannot wait. But discuss of your options with your dentist as well as your doctor before making any decision and taking any action. In some rare cases, severe gum infections may cause harm to you and your baby.

Every day holds the possibility of a miracle.
