The Truth About Pregnancy

Before I got pregnant with my first child, my focus was on having a healthy baby, and nothing I had to go through to have that mattered. Everyone was so happy for me and my husband, and my family told me all about the wonderful things to expect. But it seemed no amount of research could prepare me for the pregnancy symptoms no one talks about.

Sure, I had morning sickness...all day long. There were food cravings and aversions, the late night snacks and morning sprints to the bathroom.

But then I had some, well, gross pregnancy symptoms. There was the gas, the bad skin, constipation and drooling. How come nobody was talking about these things? I saw no "glow", I just had swollen feet that I could hardly get into my shoes anymore, and after being on those swollen dogs all day, my legs seized up with cramps. Oh yeah, and I started snoring.

Not exactly the graceful, dignified transition into motherhood I had envisioned.

But then I felt that first kick. Not just a flutter where you're not sure if it was just the rumbling of what you ate a few hours ago, but that real first kick that is a signal from your unborn child to her mom that she's there, she's healthy, and she's got some punch!

Nothing can compare to that feeling, and I don't care what people say, that never gets old. Feeling baby kick for the first time is a magical moment, matched only by the first time her dad felt her kick his hand.

For a while I was able to ignore the fatigue that made me want to curl up in a ball under my desk at work or in the bathroom when I was in there for the tenth time that day. I was able to shift my focus from the constant nausea to the little one in my belly, and wondering if she could hear me, if she knew what I was doing, if my wandering around was lulling her to sleep in my womb.

Now that she's a few months old, my days are filled with joy (and sometimes some tears), and I'll always cherish the time that I was pregnant with my daughter. I can look back and laugh at some of the gross pregnancy symptoms I endured, and sometimes I can remember them like it was yesterday.

And just maybe, I'll be willing to go through it all again. Maybe.
