Limestone comprises of calcite, a fossil that can be found at the bottom of the lakes and sea. Limestone is a sedimentary rock formed in the deep sea & is deposited on the sea floor where the shells and bones and all other materials that are replete with calcium get collected. Limestone is made up of minerals such as aragonite and dolomite. There are several varieties of limestone such as chalk, coral reefs, etc.
- Limestone is used for making floorings. It is also used in crushed or aggregate rock forms.
- It also acts as popular feedstock in sundry industries. For instance, it is also used in industrial processes dedicated to fertilizer, steel, and iron production.
- Limestone is added to the various natural water bodies such as lakes, ponds, rivers, etc., so that the water does not turn excessively acidic. This is called liming. This also aids in making the water inhabitable for various forms of sea creatures. In the regions that receive a lot of polluted rain, the use of limestone in rivers and lakes is mandatory.
- Limestone is also added to make the acidic soils fertile. The use of limestone can also make the soils less prone to unanticipated fluctuations in pH. This is the reason why limestone is applied in gardens, lawns, crops, pastures, etc. The soil benefits as it receives sufficient amount of calcium and the acidity in the soil also lowers down.
- The limestone also minimizes the catastrophic effects caused by toxic metals such as nickel, lead, and cadmium. Liming reduces the effect of the metals present in the water.
- Life forms in water such as mussels and crayfish receive calcium from the limestone and make shells for protecting themselves. Some creatures like the fishes also use limestone to develop scales and bones.
Usually when limestone is sprinkled in the water the instant result is a little cloudiness that totally obscures the water. The soil at the bottom of the water gives out a lot of phosphorous, which in return causes the plant vegetation to multiply.
