Also known as Kaolin, Levigated China Clay contains about 10 to 95% of kalonite. It is a natural mineral found in decomposed granite stones and is a natural component of soil formed from the chemical weathering of rock in hot and moist temperatures. Mostly available in lumps and granule form, it is used in various industries such as textile, plastic, paint, rubber, ceramic, etc. Levigated China clay is produced and used in both processed and crude forms.
What Is Levigated China Clay Used For?
Levigated China clay derives its value from the whiteness and fine particle size that can be engineered to suit any requirement. Predominantly used in paper industry, it is a white pigment and finisher that gives paper a slightly shiny, smooth texture. Just like ball clay, levigated clay is used widely in ceramics where it is used as a whitening agent for sanitary ware and table ware and as electrical porcelain and glazes. Levigated china clay is also used as a base in toothpaste and also as a performance mineral in paints, rubber, plastic and white cement. In addition to this, it is used for preparing moulds of casting metals.
Properties of Levigated China Clay
- Levigated clay does not absorb water.
- The smoothness of this type of China Clay helps in providing luster to the object.
- Also, the stickiness in Levigated China Clay helps in forming objects of different shapes and sizes.
Commercial grade Levigated China Clay is obtained through either of the following process:
- Air Floatation
- Water Washing
- Calcination
- Surface Modification
Air Floatation: Air floatation is a relatively inexpensive process employed to reduce residue, grit and moisture. In this process, crude levigated clay is ground and classified to acceptable size distribution and dried. Air floated clay is poor in color, leaves high residue and is more abrasive.
Water Washing: Water washing is probably an intense and expensive process of sieving, grinding, centrifuging, classifying, treating and drying levigated clay to achieve a desired level of impurity, particle size, etc. Adding to it, some grades of levigated clay may be processed through delamination. Regardless of the finished product, free in moisture content, water washed clay retains about 14% of water.
Calcination: In this process, water washed clay grade is ground and heated at a temperature above 600° Celsius and ground again to reduce lumps formed during calcination. At elevated temperature, Levigated China Clay can be obtained.
