Sometimes the little guy isn't always taken as seriously as “The Man” that runs a big corporation. Think for a moment about some of the most successful businesses today, Apple, Microsoft, Disney, Amazon, Google…. the list goes on. What do they all have in common? They were started from home.

The questions arises in many "how to start my own business" One thing they didn't do was treat their company or idea like it was little. From the start, they had the mind of a big business and operated thinking like the CEO of a company, even when they were broke and carving out space in their basement or garage. They were so excited about their dreams and products they ate, lived, and breathed new ideas. They created a vision of what they wanted and every day they were dedicated to working towards that goal.

CEO’s of major companies have to have vision and know where they are headed. What is your purpose? What is your product? How much money do you want to make? How much time are you able to spend? What kind of profit margins do you have? These are just a few of the questions you have to ask. Some of the things you want to avoid are treating it like a hobby, something you’ll get around to when you have time. You also can’t make it something that can be pushed to the side, because it’s “just an idea”. You may not be able to devote 40 to 60 hours a week to it like a CEO would their company, but the quality and respect for it needs to be the same.

Organization is the key, especially because most start-ups are done with very little space and not much capital. Every detail counts as well as efficiency. Organization can help to keep everything in place. Even if it is a small space you have to work from, try to keep it clutter free and organized. Time management will help you organize the rest of your life and let you devote time to your business.

Stick to your plan though and reevaluate how you did at the end of each week. If you’re trying to spend time working for an hour after work each day and that’s not happening because of the family coming home, then change it to early morning hours while it’s quiet. You have to be effective when you’re starting from the ground up. Success will be better sooner rather than later.

Sometime it’s hard being the “lone gunman” and you can feel isolated while working on a dream. We tend to equate success to the amount of money something generates and in the beginning stages that won’t happen. Stay focused on your end in mind and recruit close friends, family, or colleagues to listen to your ideas and keep you motivated. CEO’s are accustomed to managing daily challenges and unexpected turns.

Realize that if what you were doing was easy and guaranteed you millions, everyone would be doing it. Pat yourself on the back for thinking like a CEO and being willing to do today what others are not, so that someday you will be able to do the things that they are not able to do.
