Battle Of the Spreadsheet Apps: Numbers Vs Cloudon Vs Kingsoft

When that important work deadline is fast approaching, you often end up working on your documents outside of work hours, and the app marketplace has just the thing to help you manage your workload on the go.

Ideally built for tablets, the three best apps we could find for making/editing a spreadsheet are Numbers, CloudOn and Kingsoft Office.

But put up against each other, which one comes out on top? Let’s find out…

Numbers

The only one of these apps which charges you to download it, costing £6.99, which isn’t cheap, but it does have some good features to warrant the price tag.

First of all, just looking at the app’s user interface, you can tell that it is a very professional piece of kit, more than capable of handling any regular sized document.

It also links brilliantly with the Mac OSX version of the app if you have an Apple computer, making sharing work on both systems simple for me to do.

It runs brilliantly, running it on an iPhone 4s I encountered no lag and didn't suffer any issues when downloading or viewing documents.

But, whilst it does look professional, it does come across as confusing to someone who has never used a mobile spreadsheet before. Also, editing spreadsheets was a bit of a chore, having to select a certain cell was a nightmare, but this was similar on all three apps, and I think using a larger screen may have benefited here.

Also, the way it links to DropBox and other storage systems like this was a bit of a pain, having to open the DropBox app and then select the document and then open using Numbers, as opposed to just opening Numbers and linking it to my cloud storage through there.

Whilst it does run well and looks very smart, its technical style and price really was a put-off, but linking it with my Mac was a nice touch, I still didn't like the look of the price.

CloudOn

Coming free off the App Store on our iPhone, the first thing you notice with CloudOn is its superb design, it was simple to use and looked smart but also user-friendly.

It linked quickly and easily with my SkyDrive account, but also works well with DropBox, Google Drive, Box and Hightail and quickly loaded up fairly large documents.

Whilst the loading times were better than the other two apps, one thing I found infuriating was lag, both when scrolling through work and editing it, another problem I noticed came when I wanted to insert an image into my spreadsheet, whilst it showed ones I had stuck in on my PC, it wouldn't add one from my handset.

You struggle to complain when an app is free, and it’s nice to say that CloudOn looks incredibly friendly and easy to use, but I was knocked back by the lag and image problems, meaning that I would use this to edit more work than to actually create documents.

Kingsoft Office

Also free from the App Store, Kingsoft Office might not sound the most professional spreadsheet app, but it certainly is the easiest to use.

Working with my SkyDrive account (as well as DropBox, Google Drive, Box and WebDAV), it linked quickly and suffered from absolutely no lag, not even when opening a pdf document far bigger than most regular sized spreadsheet documents.

In fact the only issue I could find with the app, besides being hard to use on an iPhone 4s screen like the other apps, was that it took a while to actually open larger documents. Once the document was open it was brilliant for me, but I had to wait around two minutes for the app to open a 38MB pdf file.

You will struggle to find a better Office Suite app out there, especially for free. In fact, I'm personally keeping the app on my phone after downloading it as it really was that good. Kingsoft definitely comes out on top in my eyes.

So, overall Kingsoft Office was a clear winner. If you found this review helpful then you may like read about other apps I have reviewed on the UK’s Mobile Phones [dot] com website.
