Join An Organization

Do you belong to an organization such as a choir or a sports team? Many people join organizations for the companionship and other benefits that organizations provide, while others prefer to spend their time alone. If you do not belong to an organization, you should consider joining one. Why?

One reason is because belongingness is a psychological need. When a person belongs, he feels wanted, needed, and loved. People enjoy having him around and miss him when he is gone. When he returns, they welcome him with open arms.

Another reason to belong is for time management. If you belong to an organization that meets once a week, for example, you have the rest of the week to get your work done. Then, when the time comes to join the members of your group at the weekly meeting, you can relax and enjoy your time there. You can enjoy "catching up" with your friends to find out how their week has been going. You will not be nervously glancing at your watch, thinking about leaving the meeting early to return to your work, and hoping that no one will notice when you leave.

A third reason that you should belong is for well-roundedness. If you are a high school senior who is applying for college scholarships, scholarship committees want to award scholarships to students whose interests go beyond the classroom. Grades are extremely important, and some scholarships require a very high grade point average. In addition to good grades, however, students must also show community involvement. Involvement in activities shows that students know how to manage their time. They can be involved in activities and still earn good grades. Committees would be interested in someone who is a member of the cheerleading squad, dance team, school newspaper, or yearbook staff. These are the students who receive scholarships.

Finally, if you write, belonging to an organization will give you experiences to use in your writing. You might write an article about an upcoming choir concert, for example. In your article, you can write about the songs you are singing, whether there will be any soloists, where and when the concert will be, and the price of the tickets.

Take a moment to jot down your interests. Then look online or check your local phone book for organizations in your area that match those interests. Many different organizations exist. In your research, you may find one that is just right for you.

Great idea, Hollie. I love being part of a group that isn't work-related--it's the closest we grown-ups can get to that chummy familiarity that seems to vanish from our lives as soon as we leave school and get jobs. I've always wanted to do community theater, but nothing is close enough to be sensible. Thanks for the article.

Feeling a sense of belonging is very important. I believe one of the best things for people suffering depression is to do as you say and join an organization. Being around others and feeling wanted are some keys to happiness.
