A topic I hate to write about, but it seems like I must Prostate cancer one of the major killers of males in America. There is about 2.5 million cases of Prostate Cancer around the United States alone. Prostate cancer before 40 is very rare and usually occurs in males aging 60-65 years old. One out of every six men, will die of prostate cancer in his lifetime. I hate to be a downer so here are some figures for the survival rate(If and only if you get checked out before any serious damage occurs).
Local stage- means that the cancer spreads to the outside of the prostate. Four out of five patients are found at this first stage of the cancer devlopment. Your estimated five year survival rate is estimated to be just below one hundred percent.
Regional stage- means that the cancer has spread from the prostate to surrounding areas, that could be affected by the cancerous cells. Your estimated five year survival rate is about as good as the Local stage.
Distant stage- this is the worst case scenario. This means the cancer has spread to lymph nodes as well as bones and other organs. As my friend who is in Pre-med stated,"Once its in the bone, its literally in the bone. There really is not much they can do for you at this stage. Your estimated five year survival rate drastically falls down to twenty five percent.
So What Does all this mean?
This means if your around the age, where you should be getting checked for prostate cancer, you should just pony up and do it. So many men refuse to swallow there pride and get checked out. The pre-screen check could save your life, and extend your life another fifteen years!
How Do the Screenings work?
Most men are familiar with the good old glove and lube routine, where a doctor inserts his finger into a males rectum in order to check the prostate for issues. Most men(including myself feel very disgusted by this scenario), but there comes a certain time where you must do what is best for your health even if it includes the method described above. There is however another method of inspection which goes unrecognized by the masses. The Prostate Specific Antigen blood test which measures the concentration of a certain molecule in the blood. Truth be told the glove and lube routine is a lot more accurate than the P.S.A. blood test.
Final Thoughts
If you are a older male and are currently reading this I hope these stats above help you realize just how seriously you should be getting checked. This screening in no manner diminishes your "manhood" and should be thought of as part of a healthy lifestyle. In the end we only have one life to live, so please do yourself a favor and make it a long and enjoyable one. Thanks for reading
Sincerely,
The Prince.
