Birds Of A Feather Flock Together

Those long sunny hot days seem to be vanishing fast as we approach fall. My birthday is October 23, and it’s just hard for me to believe that another year has passed so quickly. I’m trying to embrace the tiny spots of gray hair sprouting in my head as “Wisdom”. The truth is I’m almost forty years old.

Recently I have been having visions of when I was much younger and I was able to run outside all day without getting tired. My mother would yell “stay inside or outside, the choice is yours!” Many times I choose outside but would stay out after the street lights were on.

My mother is from the old school, so of course I had to go to that bush and pick a switch when I was tardy. Most young folk might not know what I’m referring to! I started to notice a pattern however; I only ended up searching for a switch when I played with the boys who lived uptown. In this article, I’m going to briefly discuss how I learned birds of a feather flock together

. Black birds, Red birds, peacocks, or parrots! It really doesn’t matter which birds we identify as we begin to analyze these words. As a young child it took me a while to understand this concept of birds flocking together.

Why was it that when I was playing with the uptown boys I got in trouble but when I was with the downtown boys who lived in my area, I was punctual? The uptown boys had a reputation of being bad boys and troublemakers in my area. I always thought they were a friendly group of fellows who loved to express their opinions to adults.

In school they would speak back to the teacher and defy authority, which made them very popular in my school district. It seems they all excelled on learning bad habits early such as cursing the teachers out and mastering the art of letting their pants sag but still be able to walk, without tripping. They wore addidas jump suits with matching shoes.

My father expressed his concerns to me about that crew when I was in 7th grade. I will never forget how he took me by the hand and forced me to look him in the eye as he plainly stated “Birds of a feather flock together and if you continue to hang with them, you will end up in jail.”

Within six years five of my so called friends from uptown ended up in juvenile detention homes and on the way to prison. I realize my father had wisdom and was only trying to teach me a very important lesson in life. Not only do birds of a feather flock together but it is important that I harness the skills to pick the right friends in this world.

Your ability to pick friends who are trying to be successful in this world could be a key ingredient to you being successful in this world! Live your life inspiring others and being a role model.

As I get closer to my birthday this fall, I’m embracing my gray hair as a sign of wisdom. I give honor to my father who taught me early, birds of a feather flock together and it’s up to me to choose to be a bird that strives high in life and to be the best I can be.
