I was just viewing my local news after having a long hard day at work. Is it me or is the news just down right depressing? So much violence and thugs are coming across my screen, I can’t keep up with all the wanted pictures that I see. I see young men and women of all different ages and races committing crimes at an astounding rate.

What can I do to stop this cycle? Generations after generation seem to think that it is common to keep using that revolving door to prison. I want to discuss some things anyone might be able to do to stop this cycle.

Mentors Growing up as a teenager in a world that seemed so cold, it was difficult navigating my way through lifes obstacles. My father always had his door open to me to come to him with any problems that might have come up but I wasn’t comfortable all the time, depending on the issue.

One of the most important things my father did was to assign me a mentor at a local boys club. My mentor was about seven years older than me so he understood everything I was going through. He gave me great advice about every aspect of my life. We would meet up at least twice a month, sometimes more and I would update him with everything that was going on.

He explained to me in details about gangs and how they operate. He took the time to get my mindset into being a leader not a follower. Now that I’m an adult, its very important to me that I mentor any young people that I can. I want to help my community, by helping to raise young boys into great young men in our community. I believe that by mentoring the youth, it will break that cycle of in and out of jail.

Community Service and School Activties When I was younger I volunteered at a local hospital to try and help my community. I met a friend their who was heavily into crime at the age of fourteen years old. He told me he started with car radios and with in one year he was stealing cars.

The judge had sentenced him to community service and our paths crossed because I was working there. I will always remember how he was smart, funny and had a great spirit about him. I didn’t understand how he was considered a criminal because he made some bad decisions. I quickly learned that my father had me enrolled in everything and his father didn’t have him enrolled in anything.

Zero, no after school activites, or sports program to help him relate to others in his school. A football coach teaches more than football as football players already know. Coaches are also mentors to young kids who need a positive adult in their life. I believe we should encourage our youth to be enrolled in Community service or school activities, that will break the cycle of crimes by misdemeanors.

Motivational speakers should encourage youth to get mentors and to get involved in Community Service or school activites.
