So you have spent all night for months and sometimes years working on a book and now you’re ready to learn the book publishing process. Thankfully, you will be able to learn the book process before the publication is on the market so you will know what to expect in future books.
The procedures in book publishing and everything that it entails may vary depending on the type of book you have written. Is it classified as a reference book, textbook, trade book, novel, etc? With the onset of technology, the whole book publishing process may have changed but there are still some basic concepts that have remained the same such as editing, signing a contract with the publisher and finishing the book within six months to one year or whatever time period is stated in the contract.
The first phase is where editors are recommending to you any changes that should be made with the publication. Most editors usually look at the bigger picture-accuracy of the details included and whether modification is needed. Later on in the process, you may also get some feedback from your publishing house or agent. Depending on the type of book which is edited depends on the changes that may be made. If you have written an educational book or reference book, the editor in charge may give tips on revising it after it has been reviewed by peers. If you have a trade book then the line editor or content editor may suggest changes. Textbooks are first sent to the development editor. His/her recommendations may be of stylistic or organizational changes. These suggestions will make your book competitive with similar publications.
Some believe the book publishing process can be frustrating. And to be honest, it can be because you deal with a lot of rejection. However, to make things simple, first concentrate on completeing your book. Next, contact an editor or literary agent. The agent then decides whether it's good enough to submit it to top book publishers. You may get discouraged with editors and agents, but you understand that the book publishing industry is only successful when the publications that authors write are sold. If your work is accepted by a publisher, congrats! The next step is to meet with the publishing house and negotiate about commissions and royalty.
Understanding the book publishing process is only the first step in becoming a successful writer and making a name for yourself. Be prepared to take rejection but don't ever give up. Good luck!
