Peer Reviewed Publishing

Publishing is a nasty business, for the faint-hearted who have no tenacity; not for obvious reasons that would spring into mind, at the reading of this statement.

Peer reviewed publishing is a very long process that can take 2 years or even more.

It is demanding, time consuming, socially alienating, burdensome and all dragged out with very little promise of being published at the end – but in my opinion, very satisfactory.

There is Popular Academic and Peer Reviewed Publishing in the broad spectrum of scientific oriented publishing. The above preamble, extols the ‘virtues’ of the latter; I will indulge with an overview.

To start off, a prospective academician/scientist will need a completed manuscript. The completed manuscript should have been worked over multiple times to fine tune it. Knowledgeable others will need to pore over it as well, to offer constructive criticism especially those in one’s faculty/colleagues.

The author will then have to decide what Journal to send the completed manuscript to. Decision having been made, the submission will then follow. In this instance, the proper procedure MUST be followed for certainty that the editor will accept your submission. Thus, a cover letter, multiple copies and processing fee (if required) should then be sent to the editor of the Journal.

Author then waits for the Journal editor and its reviewers to work on the manuscript. 2-8 months later, you will get the initial response of: reject, revise and submit, conditional accept or accept. As the author you will only get reviewer comments but never the editor’s disposition.

For ‘revise & submit’, the body of work to be covered can be enormous as recommended or the author would take a different approach compared to the initial manuscript. When then the author makes a resubmission, it must be completely done with simple methodology on how issues raised were dealt with. Months later, the author will receive a letter from the editor with copies of reviews for the revised work.

If accepted, at the outset or after revision, the author may wish to make revisions according to reviews. Once done, the author will send the finalized copy to the editor for copy-editing.

Should your work be rejected before ‘revise and submit’, make use of the reviews and try again.
