It sometimes seems that the public appetite for celebrity gossip knows no bounds. Not only are millions of newspapers and magazines bought each week and devoured for their celebrity content, many people scour the internet and read celebrity blogs such as the one written by Perez Hilton.. And more recently people have been able to get their celebrity fix by following their favourite celebrities on Twitter.
I have never quite understood why ‘celebrities’ would chose to use Twitter particularly those that regularly complain about the press. From A listers to Z listers there are those who cannot resist exposing parts of their lives and inviting even further gossip. Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are two of the worst celebrity examples of this.
Has Ashton been unfaithful? Is there marriage in trouble? I have no idea and frankly I don’t care, but I've been amused by the fact that after sending so many loving messages to each other their Twitter behaviour suddenly changde. There were a couple of days when it was alleged they stopped following each other and the gossip columns were printing their cryptic messages. Now it’s difficult to know whether the obvious anger or hut was directed at each other or their followers, but by drastically changing the way they normally behave certainly invited lots of interest.
The newly engaged Elizabeth Hurley let the whole world know when she and Shane Warne were going through a rough patch at the beginning of their relationship. Did the world need to know? Of course not, but seemingly Hurley couldn’t resist dropping hints, which makes me wonder if she and others just enjoy the publicity (despite the frequent denials)
But it’s not just Hollywood actors and models who seem to want to tell all about their lives reality ‘stars’ have also jumped on the bandwagon. In the UK when two of the stars of the popular TV reality programme ‘The Only Way is Essex’ Mark Wright and Lauren Goodger broke off their engagement and she revealed in magazines that she’d once aborted their child they then proceeded to have a slanging match on Twitter. I’m sorry I don’t get it, I really don’t. Why would you want to share this information with people who you don’t know?
Ashton Kutcher once said that he wrote about himself, because if he didn’t someone else would. Of course that’s true and I can’t imagine what that’s like but there are plenty of celebrities who manage to stay under the radar and avoid much gossip but Kutcher and Moore aren't like that. A few months ago Moore shared with the whole world a picture of herself standing in front of the bathroom mirror in a bikini or her underwear! Now I don’t have her figure so I wouldn’t want to even share with my nearest and dearest a picture of me like that but even if I was a stunning as Moore is, I certainly would baulk at sharing photographs with the rest of the world.
But where celebrities go – many ordinary people want to follow. Twitter provides an opportunity for them not only to follow their idols but also to expose their life beyond the reach of their own circle of friends and family to the whole twitter community.
Someone I’m connected to on Twitter was recently on a camping holiday and bemoaning the fact, that with the children sharing their parents tent he had no chance of sex that night. Call me old fashioned but it’s just too much information and it’s not the first time he’s made that type of comment. I also think it’s a silly thing to do when he uses his twitter account to promote his business as a corporate trainer.
Twitter is a phenomena which is here to stay and millions enjoy using it, including me – but just now and then I wish people would exercise a little more discretion and just keep some information to themselves.
What do you think?
