Defensive Driving Rant

I was lucky enough to grow up during a time when driver's education was a complete course offered in High School. We were taught "The Rules of the Road." This course taught not only how to be a law abiding driver, but also, a safe and courteous one. It seems the new drivers of today are taught the laws but not the safeties or courtesies. Here are, in no particular order, the things that really get to me when driving.

First off, the small strip of road used to merge on to the freeway is called the "accelerator lane." Do not slow down when on this strip. Speed up to the flow of traffic and merge in to it. And, when merging, do not slow down unless there is no choice. The person behind you is not expecting you to slow down! Staying with the subject of merging. When a lane is ending and two lanes are merging it should be one car to merge at a time. The lane that is not ending should allow one car in to it's lane at a time. Too often the flowing lane crowds bumper to bumper and doesn't allow the other lane to merge. On the other hand, two or three cars will often crowd in from the merging lane not waiting their turn. A proper merge will keep traffic flowing, anything else will bottleneck things up.

Where I live, Southern California, it is legal to make a right turn on a red light if a full stop is made first and it is safe to proceed. If this is the law where you are from, know this and do it! Don't wait for the green light to proceed. And speaking of right turns, don't make a right turn from the middle of your lane. Move to the right, near the curb, a little before the intersection, then proceed to complete your turn. This one is also true at a stop light or sign where there is no separate right hand turn lane.

I drive the freeway a lot and it really gets to me when a person won't pull over for a faster car coming up from behind. Granted, it is not the law but it is certainly the right thing to do, especially if you are driving in the fast lane.

I will conclude my rant with one last complaint. People who don't realize that they can make a left hand turn after a left turn arrow if that arrow turns in to a solid green light and not a red arrow. I sit through too many light cycles because of this one.

This concludes my rant. I have other issues regarding driving but I will save them for a later date. Thank you.
