Are e-cigarettes in the process of becoming a fashionable item? In our Modern Day fashion, any new gadget is very welcome. Especially if they are endorsed by the rich and famous and if Hollywood is making it one of its own.
For anyone who used to be a heavy smoker the use of e cigarettes on a daily basis has its advantages, mainly being cheaper and healthier. There are now many different types of e cigarettes, coming in different shapes and forms (pipe and cigars to name a few). They look realistic and they also come with different flavors.
Another point that makes this accessory fashionable and practical is that you can smoke it practically anywhere. With smoking bans popping out everywhere in the world, it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with social events without having to break out of conversations for a few minutes in order to satiate our need for nicotine.
All of this has not escaped our celebrities who have now started to use e cigarettes. The advantages of not having bad breath or smelly clothes is an added bonus for people who are in the spotlight all the time. Imagine speaking to your fans and seeing them cringing away because you smell like an ashtray! Not a very good PR job I would say!
Leonardo Di Caprio was one of the first celebrities using e cigarettes in public. So many photographs of him have been taken with an e cigarette in his mouth that a whole album could be made on this subject alone. Robert Pattinson is also well known for using them in public places. Catherine Zeta Jones is another user who moved to e cigarettes after Michael Douglas beat throat cancer. Even the wild child of Hollywood, Lindsay Lohan has been seen puffing on e cigarettes.
In the past few years, e cigarettes have also been seen making their way in the film industry. Cigarettes had always been a big part of Hollywood. There aren't many films where we cannot see an actor puffing on a cigarette. However this is exactly what happened in 2010: No Hollywood movie were showing cigarette smoking. This was a first. Anti smoking groups had done their job very well and managed to create an awareness around the dangers of smoking real cigarettes so much so that even Hollywood would no longer take their chance on showing them in films. This changed with the use of e cigarettes in films in the past few years. The first one was 'The Tourist' where we can see Johnny Depp smoking in a non smoking area. Another one 'Beneath the Darkness' also shows Dennis Quaid smoking an e cigarette.
This has probably helped changing the perception most people have around e cigarette and made them move from smoking 40 a day to a healthier alternative.
That said, the e cigarette market is a growing one, but will the fashion industry capitalize on it? It seems it is already the case with 'fashion mini e cigarettes' or 'mini e cigarettes sets' for sale. There are also some new e cigarette accessories for sale such as metal cases of different shapes and colors. Some parts are also made to be sold separately: chargers, batteries, car chargers, tank atomizers, atomizer covers, etc. However it does not seem to be following the growing trend of people moving to e cigarettes. The fashion industry might still be waiting for the final decision as to what is to become of e cigarette: Will it become part of the tobacco industry like some reports seem to show in the US or will it become part of the pharmaceutical industry which looks more likely in Europe? Or will it be simply banned altogether?
We do not have the answer to these questions yet so as for now I will be 'vaping' on my e cigarette, the smoke of the future... Even the wording associated with e cigarettes is a trend in itself it seems...
