As I have contemplated the recent school shootings, I can't help but wonder how to deter these crazed gunmen from attempting these unthinkable acts against humanity. Could it be that having more good guys with guns have an impact on whether a bad guy with guns and ammo gets his way with innocent bystanders?
I find it very disturbing to think that there are those out there that actually believe that taking away our guns is the answer to stopping these mass murderers. The only way to help curb these attacks is to have trained, armed good guys in public.
Cold War History Lesson
Think of it this way. The cold war would have ended much differently if the U.S. hadn't been armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons. From a position of strength, President Reagan said to the Russian Secretary, Mr. Gorbachev, "If you seek peace....if you seek prosperity...if you seek liberalization...Come here to this gate, Mr. Gorbachev! Open this gate, Mr. Gorbachev! Tear down this wall!"
The same principle applies to weapons in the hands of lunatics here in public. If we as the good guys are unarmed, then we have no position of strength to make any difference at all. The first thing that is heard from the liberal media after such a tragic and unthinkable act of killing innocent men, women and children is to call for more stringent gun control laws.
Don't bring a Knife to a Gunfight
I do not believe that taking away guns or adding more procedural red tape will in any way deter these criminals. Maybe that is why we never hear of those good guys with guns stopping a mass murderer in his tracks before he can kill. What? You haven't heard of any?
Just recently in the State of Oregon, a gunmen was stopped by an innocent bystander because he had the training and the concealed weapon the he used to bring down this perpetrator. He even had to move to a better position to have a better line of sight and so a stray bullet would not endanger innocent people in the mall.
When is the last time you heard about a mass murder happening at a shooting range, or a police station, where there are good people with guns ready, willing and able to keep bad things from happening.
I know, I know, we are not in the wild, wild, west, but we are in a country where we have the right to protect life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If we good guys with guns have to use deadly force in order to do that, then so be it.
Just another thought from this old cowboy.
VERY appropriate right now McK...and I totally agree...first of all...why would anyone want to take away the guns from a country's people?? This is the question....ah yes...if they are defenseless then we can install anything we want to in that country and they cannot rise up against us (in control)....strange that the majority of the people did not see this before the election....and now the man in charge is trying to find a way to get a third term....????? hmmmmm....thoughts.....many thoughts....great article
Mac, You know the stats. Places where they are banned, crime increases. If they want to get rid of guns, why don't they outlaw them like meth and cocaine? Cars kill people. Will they ban them? Jerry
Hey Jerry! Great to hear from you. Yes, it's only logical that to outlaw anything that can be used to kill. The first killing I'm sure was a rock, let's ban them as well. Logic is not a strong suit with those in leadership positions, for sure. Mac
Bravo for your article. All you need to know about the failed gun ban laws in some states & cities, is to look at Chicago. Chicago has banned guns yet, they had a higher murder rate last year than we had with a war in Afghanistan. Take away the law abiding citizens guns and I will guarantee the criminals will still have theirs. If, that's not enough, messing with the Constitution is a really bad idea. They can't get things right now. Do you really want them to start dismantling our Constitution?
Very well said, Meredith! Gun bans is not the way to go at all. The question is how do we keep the guns out of the bad guys hands? This will never happen, since bad guys have their ways to get them. Arming good guys that have the proper training and skill, however, is. Just a thought. Thanks for your comment!
As an Aussie, like so many other Aussies I know, I can't understand this point of view. We have gun control laws that were introduced after the Port Arthur massacre in 1996- there has not been a gun massacre in Australia since. As a citizen you can still obtain a licence and permit to buy a gun as long as you meet certain requirements...but this regulation prevents 'crazed madmen' from obtaining such deadly weapons as easily as they do in the States. I grew up on a farm and was raised with guns and don't have any issue against gun owners but I fully support any government that controls their sale. We may be upside-down down under but it sure feels safer...
I actually agree with you that something needs to be done to restrict automatic weapons from being in the hands of the public. Should we ask the US govt to buy back these weapons and use them in the military forces? Destroy them? I actually think that is not so upside down. I also think that we need to quit idolizing the perpetrators in the media making them more popular than rockstars! Thanks for your great input, Nicole. It's great to hear from the land down under.
You are very brave to tackle an issue like this at a time like this. Very controversial. Good guys with guns have never been the problem. I firmly believe in gun ownership but assault rifles have to go or be licensed by very, very, very special decree. Arming teachers is ridiculous ... I can see myself fumbling all over the place and shooting myself in the foot :)
Yeah, it's a passion when all my life I have had guns of all sorts. Serving in the Military like my father and grandfather has me on the side of using our guns for good. I think that teachers that have the inclination and the training can make a great defense against the maniacs with guns. It's just a thought, but I know for sure that taking guns away is not the answer for sure. Automatic weapons are something that should have never been allowed to be had by the general public. I view them like nuclear weapons, they shouldn''t be available at all. But now that they are out there and available its a tough issue to solve, now.
Here in N. Ireland where we have had our troubles it is surprisingly easy to purchase a firearm semi -auto or otherwise. There are checks done to see if you have a history of violence or depression etc but as long as you have not been in trouble with the law your doctor can stand up for you and you have somewhere safe to store it the firearm is yours. While working in a gun store I was amazed at some of the guys who were given permits that I would have said were no wiser than the man on the moon but they still got them.
I think we should have more of a background check done here in the US, for sure. I used to work in the armory while I was in the Air Force and I agree with you about seeing some kooks that should have never been issued guns with live ammo! Thanks for your great input, Mark.
I don't like the current trend of making trained gun owners (good guys) appear evil, as when the New York newspaper published the names and addresses of gun owners w/ an interactive map, just like they do w/ sex offenders.
Are they crazy? They are just baiting the gun owners hand in this. I know if I lived there and know there has been a burglary to steal a guns because of these interactive maps, it would cause more due diligence on my part. That's what gun safes are for. A six foot, 1000 lb safe would keep them from stealing my weapons.
A good thought provoking article .. my cowboy friend... but if more training and checking was done before a purchase was allowed ... would it not maybe weed out the maniacs.??... It is not a problem unique to the USA, we have 1000s of unlicensed weapons floating around this country and our laws to obtain a licence are very stringent, its like trying to pass an elephant pat through the tail end of a mouse... almost impossible... these days I think we are returning to the wild west days where a shoot out between good and bad is the only answer... good article....
I appreciate your candor, Rob. I certainly agree that more training and background checks are necessary and I think with today's technology that purchases of ammo can be tracked with unusual amounts causing red flags and police intervention. Another thought is to memorialize the victims instead of idolizing the perpetrator in the media, but how do we get that done?
