Guests Wedding Outfits: The Royal Wedding

I have to admit although like many women interested in fashion I couldn’t wait to see what Catherine Middleton was going to wear on her wedding day, I was actually more keen to see the guests wedding outfits. Since the big day I like many other people have spent some happy hours looking at the many photographs that captured the beautiful, the stylish, the stunning and the downright awful. I wonder now that all the pictures are in the public eye how many of the guests wedding outfits have been consigned to the back of the wardrobe never to be seen again.

As I’ve looked at all the photographs of the guests wedding outfits, the thing that struck me once again is that money cannot buy style. Although there were some beautiful outfits, there were some that were just so wrong they were embarrassing (and yes I do mean you Mrs Bercow). Some guests wore clothes from the high street and some were dressed top to toe in designer outfits, that clearly cost a great deal of money. I’ve always thought that some designers get ridiculously snooty about who wears their clothing, but when you see some of the publicity that has been generated from some of the guests wedding outfits, it’s probably not that surprising.

Philip Treacy is one of the country’s foremost and respected milliners. The generally critical response to Princess Beatrice’s hat, won’t actually have done him any damage at all. Personally it wasn’t the hat I had a problem with. I thought the Valentino haute couture coat was far too old, for such a pretty girl her make-up was far too heavy and her normally glossy red hair looked dry and in need of a trim. However, it is the hat that has generated a huge amount of column inches in the press and on the social networking sites, but none of this will harm Treacy. He also designed hats worn by 29 other guests including Victoria Beckham, Tara Palmer-Tompkinson and which generally gained a positive response.

Dame Vivienne Westood is an equally respected designer, who has never really appeared to mind what people think of her clothes, but really the horror of Princess Eugenie looking like a pantomime dame really did her no favours. Now whether Princess Eugenie actually approached the designer or it was something that a stylish bought to her who knows. The unflattering colour, the shape that made her normally gorgeous figure look twice the size , teamed with inappropriate gold shoes that outfit is going to be memorable for being one of the most awful of all the guests wedding outfits and will get shown over and over again as an example of how not to dress.

Men on these occasions normally escape criticism but David Beckham created the faux pas of wearing an OBE medal. Much has been made of the fact that he was wearing it on the wrong side, but according to protocol he shouldn’t have been wearing it at all. However, I think he had a far bigger style problem with his tattoo. If ever there was an advert for not having a tattoo high on the neck, this was one of them. Sorry David, but the beautiful cut of the suit couldn’t detract from how tacky that looked.

It seems that it doesn’t matter whether it’s old money (the Royals) or new money (the Beckhams), that old adage, money can’t buy style, still holds true. What did you think about when choosing a wedding outfit?
