Is Alex Salmond Like Hitler?

Never a stranger to controversy, British historian David Starkey said that Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond is like Hitler. The comment was made at a debate at the Bow Group think tank on the subject of British history teaching in UK schools

“A Caledonian Adolf Hitler” was actually the term he used and he compared the Scottish Nationalist attitude towards the English as being like that of the Nazis towards the Jews “they are everywhere”

Not surprisingly there was a certain degree of shock ,amongst the audience present, at these remarks, drawing gasps from those gathered.

This sort of comment is not actually the first time that this comparison has been made. In January 2012 Labour MP Tom Harris was forced to resign from an advisory group after creating a video comparing the leader of the Scottish Nationalist party to the former Nazi Dictator.

This video was actually mocking SNP MSP Joan McAlpine after she claimed that Liberal Democrat and Labour MSPs were “anti Scottish”..

David Starkey is well known for adding controversy to almost any subject, not so long ago he said that “the whites had become black” on the BBC Newsnight programme, a remark that produced over 700 hundred complaints from enraged viewers.

The main thrust of Starkeys’s argument was that Alex Salmond is intent on tearing up the present set up and doing away with long standing traditions and would do it no matter what. Like Adolf Hitler he would let nothing stand in his way. The implication also, of course, being that there was a considerable amount of Anglophobia in the Scottish National Party.

Dr Starkey also claimed that it was impossible, nowadays, to talk about nationalism in a sensible context without being branded a racist.

Personally I think that the whole thing is David Starkey doing what he does best and causing a lot of fuss by ruining a point of view with silly comparisons. Comparing anyone to Adolf Hitler is relly just asking for trouble, and of course online he is now being castigated in a way that draws attention from the real argument.

The SNP, however, are past masters at this though, so should not complain too strongly. Last week the UK newspaper the Economist featured an article on their analysis of the practicalities of Scottish independence. The magazine was very sceptical about the whole thing and the front page was a spoof map featuring Skintland, Edinborrowed and the Loanlands, amongst others.

Rather than actually answer the criticism raised the SNP immediately played the “racist” card, claiming that this was the reason for the map, and one Scottish commentator even went as far as suggesting that it might be an offence under UK anti racism laws. A load of huff and bluster to turn any argument to your advantage.

So then come off it David Starkey. Saying that Alex Salmond is like Hitler is really not going to further your cause one bit.

The shenanigans of political satire, why they don't get down to issues that concern all I don't know. Most of this to be quite honest is above my head, I don't know the people concerned and they would likely have no influence over the country I live in, but good opinionated article, obviously one that gets your hackles up.

Unless someone actually is a megalomaniac dictator responsible for the death of millions then describing them as like Hitler is just asking to be laughed at. Thanks for your comment Rob

I agree with that statement to equate anyone as like Hitler ludicrous.

Thanks Rebecca. Do not agree with a lot of what David Starkey has to say (and he does have aloud voice) but he often spoils his point with hyperbole.
