Medical News - What Should We Believe?

There’s not a week that goes by in the UK when there isn’t some new medical news for people to try and digest. In the last few months there have been stories about the possibility of coffee protecting people from breast cancer and a different report about the positive effects on a healthy life style in decreasing incidents of breast cancer. There has been a report about salt being good for you and a report about salt being bad for you and a study about bananas cutting down the risk of having a stroke. I could go on, but there is so much medical news that it’s quite difficult to keep up with it.

No one can be immune to some of the wonderful medical advances there have been, which in the western world at least, has led to people living longer and far healthier lifestyles. The problem what are the public supposed to do with this medical news? It can be very difficult to know what you should or should not take on board. Information is issued about steps people should take to maintain a healthy lifestyle and then a few months later a contradictory piece of advice is suddenly issued

One group I always feel sorry for is pregnant women. One moment alcohol is bad for them and they shouldn’t touch it and then the next minute the odd glass wouldn’t hurt their unborn baby. When they’ve got through their pregnancy and have a new baby to care for they then get bombarded with different breast feeding advice, when they should start feeding them solids and then the thorny issue of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) jab.

Nowadays we’re all encouraged to eat diets which are lower in fat and sugar than previous generations, and yet the message obviously isn’t being heard properly as there is a rise in the incidents of diabetes. Also, the Government’s campaign to encourage the public to eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetable a day has been recently deemed a flop because so many people still don’t eat that number, and yet a recent study said that it has never been proven that 5 portions a day is really necessary.

During last year’s flu ‘epidemic’ different information kept being issued about who should or shouldn’t have a flu jab and who were the most vulnerable. There’s no doubt that mis-information, contradictory information, lack of information or too much information can all contribute to people turning away from issues that matter. The Government, the scientific community and the medical profession all have a real balancing act to keep the public informed of up-to-date medical news without turning people off or leaving them wondering who they should believe.
