In light of the latest shootings in Connecticut, I have given a great deal of thought to my beliefs on gun control. Although I do not agree with banning regular handguns, rifles, shotguns, and muzzleloaders, I do feel that it is time to make a ban on one class of weapons that seems to be the weapon of choice for these types of shootings. All military or military style weapons, AK-47 and so on, with enough ammo to kill hundreds needs to be removed from store inventories, ban imports, and only military or SWAT teams should have access to these weapons.
As for the military weapons out on the streets, the government should agree to purchase the weapon from the owner who has legal possession of the weapon. No other weapons should be included in the ban, just the weapons used in war to inflict mass damage on the enemy. We do not need these weapons for hunting deer or other animals, if someone cannot kill a deer, elk, moose or bear without using an AK-47 assault rifle, I suggest they hang up their hunting license and stay home!
Once we have banned these military weapons and the huge ammo clips, we should be prepared for these guns to be available on the black market and through other illegal arms deals. These weapons will still find there way into this country, piece by piece, if necessary. Smugglers will be rolling in the dough supplying everyone from gun collectors to the survivalists.
While we are in the process of banning these weapons, we must consider how these shootings could have been prevented, and if not prevented, how these insane people could be stopped once they entered a building. In most of the cases, had anyone been carrying a concealed weapon, they maybe could have taken out the gunman before the rampage took place. Schools either need security guards outside that are armed to the teeth and have a shoot first philosophy, or maybe bullet-proof glass and doors.
A military weapon ban, by itself, can only do so much to stop this insanity. More needs to be done and the media needs to take some responsibility for their 'indepth coverage' of every gory detail. The sites on the internet that post "how to" directions on bomb making and other illegal and dangerous information, need to be sensored or removed, period. Why do we need that information online in a civil society? We don't need it, any more than we need assess to military weapons and clips holding 100 rounds of ammo.
So, what should we do? continue to allow these weapons to be sold and owned or do we have a military weapon ban? The choice is pretty obvious, and I am a big supporter of the Second Amendment, but I do not see the need to own an AK-47 or any other military rifle. I am not planning on becoming Rambo, and neither should an other citizen of the United States.
HI Debbie....it is good to see someone from West Virginia on here. as I too am from that beautiful state and I agree that weapons should be kept for everyone but I believe that if there are weapons out there then every person has to be allowed to also have one for themselves....please think about this scenario...The only reason that is in our constitution is to keep a government from having them when we cannot....It is frightening to think about that but it is very important to keep our rights only for that reason...It is why the founders of our great country put that in as one of our rights. It keeps a government from turning on us and using better weapons that we are allowed to buy on us. Just as a safety precaution for us i believe we need to always keep that. as to why people do this terrible kind of thing turning on their own kind is strange, but as we all know "Guns do not kill people, people kill people" Just as forks do not makes people fast, people make themselves fat by using their fork too much. There are many accidents on the freeways but cars do not kill people and should not be outlawed....people drive in stupid ways and injure other people. I just wanted to make that point...good to see you on here...I enjoy your articles...K
