Modern Warfare 3: Marathon for the Ages

My kudos go out to the creative people that can make a video game seem so real! So much so a 15 year old boy, anonymous (but was named in the article!), collapsed after a four or five day gaming marathon!

Oh yeah, you read correctly. The mother didn't know if it had been four or five days since she had seen her son. Does this make any sense to you parents out there?

Let's see if we can figure this out. So Mom buys a new game for son. It's a war game, not just any war game! It's Modern Warfare 3.

You are the 'shooter' and have missions to accomplish! The graphics are very real and I can see how a young man could get engrossed into war. The setting and story is straight from Afghanistan and other places where chemical agents are used such as London, Paris, and other major cities. Intelligence is received by you. You need to act!

I served in the military and know just a little about tactics and team movements in enemy territory. I suppose things have changed tons since I was in. It is Modern Warfare after all. Going after terrorists to kill or capture them is the game that engrossed a 15 year old boy to play non-stop for four or five days! Oh he did stop just long enough to raid the fridge and take a quick shower.

So I began to wonder a couple of things here. This doesn't have anything to do with a great video game experience. It has everything to do with parenting!

I have nine kids, so I know a little something about kids or at least I think I do! Kids need direction and discipline. They do not always understand what is good for them in the long run. Believe me when I say I know what leadership and discipline is. My Dad was an Army Drill Instructor for 5 years! He knew how to lead and discipline when necessary!

My biggest question here is where are the parents during these four or five days? Wasn't the boy missed? He didn't eat with the family? Oh that's right it's Modern Day. I wonder how many families still have meal time. You know the time when everyone gathers around the table to eat and talk!

This story is a sad, sad commentary on family life here in Modern Times. It is the hope of this ole cowboy that parents can wake up and take notice! Parenting involves more than making babies!

Oh and one last note. The mother did take away the X-box 360.

You see! There is hope!

Street Talk

I can tell you from experience, kids need all the guidance you can give them. They actually want it to relieve some of the pressures of making decisions by themselves, and that is real stress for a kid. When a kid disapears, or an adult for that matter, into a game like that he is visiting an altered reality. It can be good and bad at the same time, but if a lesson comes out of it I would not call it bad parenting, just experimental. But then, what the heck do I know, I live on this darn thing, lol. great article.

Well I would miss a kid if he or she didn't show up for four or five days! LOL I know what you are saying about living on the damn thing! LOL I spent a whole lot more time on here than I ever had before. It's a whole different life out here in the internet world! Thanks for the read and great input, Shawn!

I think a big part of this situation of bad parenting (and it is unexcuseable, at least in my day it was) is that parents are more interested in being friends to their kids instead of parents. They have forgotten or it has been lost that parents need to be parents to their kids....what kind of moron lets a kid make all hiss own decisions....he's a kid...think about it...bang.....good article McK

Thanks Tim! I agree with Rob in that these parents should be prosecuted! They endangered that child with his life! Thanks for the read and the great input!

Unfortunately many parents use these games as babysitters. Sadly family meal time is becoming a thing of the past . I can remember loving the conversation during meals but also dreading the questions that often came up about my sometimes bad behavior. Great article mack Liked, shared

Very true. TV, Computer, Video games all can be used that way I suppose. You are correct I think. Meal time is a thing of the past. That last point of yours brings up some memories! LOL Thanks, John.

Hope I can't understand that they didn't miss him.. I think they should face prosecution... that is really bad...

Really, Really BAD! I can't understand how a parent can let that happen. Ranks right up there with leaving kids in a hot car. You're definitely right about needing to be prosecuted! Thanks for the read and input, Rob!
