I think that as a society, we have turned our backs on our origins. We have ignored what was originally a healthy and healthy way of life. Now, you ask, "Caveman diet foods? Really?!" Yes, they were healthy and had functionally sound physiques AND they were hunters and gatherers.... They did NOT eat processed foods, grains, glutens or drink soda pop. The diet of a caveman or paleolithic person was the meat they hunted, the vegetables and fruits they gathered and the water they drank! That was it. No strawberry shortcake or double-dip rocky road ice cream cone. Sorry, but our bodies were not meant to function on such a processed and fattening diet as we see today -- oh, and fast foods were not existent either (just in case you were wondering!).
The other aspect of the lifestyle in Paleo times was that they were constantly moving (or exercising) while hunting, gathering, picking, moving cave rocks, etc. The caveman of yesterday did not have a couch or sofa to lounge on and watch their 60-inch plasma television.... Big time No-No. Granted, we cannot change our entire way of life, but we should take a closer look at what we put in our mouths so that we can clean out our bodies and live a healthier, longer life.
A good Paleo diet guide is one that is NON-processed foods. So, in other words, NO processed foods (canned, frozen or otherwise packaged unnaturally), NO grains (breads, pasta, rice, corn, etc.), NO added sugars! So, you ask, "What can I eat on a Paleo diet?" Okay, you can eat:
- ~ Grass-fed Meat (NOT grain-fed. Grain is the problem here in both animals and humans).
- ~ Fowl - the things with wings that pretty much fly.
- ~ Fish - Beware of fish farms as mercury can be toxic.
- ~ Eggs - Omega-3 eggs are the best.
- ~ Vegetables - NOT deep-fried!
- ~ Oils - Coconut, olive and avocado oils (natural).
- ~ Fruits - Limit these if trying to lose weight as they do have natural sugars and added calories.
- ~ Nuts - Only eat 1/4 c. per day as they can be high in calories -- UNSALTED, of course.
- ~ Tubers - Sweet potatoes and yams. Excellent after working out to replenish glycogen levels.
Once you begin eating cleanly and drinking your water throughout the day, you will feel so much better and crave the fresh foods. Most Paleo partakers avoid milk products as well since they are processed and clog your body up. Hopefully, after a lifestyle change such as this, you will feel more agile, athletic, healthy and happier in life! So, it's okay to Be a Healthy Caveman -- Aargh!
