One Man’s Take on Technology News Headlines

I just saw an advertisement for the hottest gadgets for Christmas! I can’t seem to escape the tech bubble that was supposedly burst years before. Up until five years ago, to me, a tablet was a pill you took so you could avoid going to see the doctor. Of course today, I understand the tablet to mean something completely different. But could you end up having to see a doctor anyways by just thinking of getting one?

For many years, my dna didn’t allow me to fully embrace technology in the way that it has today. I’ve been around long enough to remember the first Atari game, Commodore 64, that white brick Nokia cellular phone, and when Pacman was all the rage – even finding its way into bars as a sit down arcade game! I also remember how my father took my brother and I to a class to learn computers at a young age but all we wanted to do was play baseball or basketball. I have relatives who have been teachers, doctors, lawyers, business owners, accountants and even a lieutenant in the air force. But very few who strayed very far from the social sciences. It seemed my destiny would be confinement to a world devoid of bytes and ram.

Eventually, I ended up in university – not in computer science though. This was in my mind a turning point in the way I thought about computers and less so ‘technology’. One of my closest friends graduated from university with me, he in computer science. He struggled as a programmer for a few years, and then got head-hunted by a computer company in Washington State. That company was Microsoft. My bud became a project leader for an innovative product that was hush hush at the time. It was Windows. He retired by the time he reached forty!

I always enjoyed what benefits technology brought to my life and others but never fully appreciated it. From being able to communicate more effectively and quickly, to learning about new subjects by surfing the net, to seeing how economies and even democracy, can be created and cemented, technology, when thoughtfully used, can do some pretty amazing things.

So I don’t feel I will become a slave to technology as long as I use it not purely as entertainment, but for practicality and efficiency. I do still like watching movies and funny Youtube videos on my Android! Now the hard part, do I or don’t I get a tablet? Which one? asus transformer prime? engadget? Why? Do I really need one? Check the cnet reviews again? I still haven’t determined yet if technology is making me work smarter, harder, or both. I’m actually more stressed just thinking about this. Time, perhaps more of it with the help of the tablet, will tell, and also be just what the doctor ordered!
