Penn State And Joe Paterno Engulfed By Child Sex Abuse Firestorm
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

A firestorm had been smoldering this past weekendbeginning on the 5th of November 2011 in Pennsylvania. Penn State and Joe Paterno were being engulfed by a child sex abuse firestorm!

This firestorm has been growing brighter and hotter in the face of continuing investigations into the allegations of a cover-up of a child abuse scandal associated with the football programat Penn State University. Ironically, I was in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, this weekend when the local news outlets began to report on the allegations of sexual abuse and the involvement of the then Assistant Coach Jerry Sandusky, Graduate Assistant Mike McQueary, and Joe Paterno.

I grew up in Western Pennsylvania where football is a staple of life and its influence and prominence is evident on everything and everyboody like a mid-winter blanket of snow. Football is king and Joe Paterno is the reigning monarch becuase of Penn State football's storied history and campaign success.

The heat of the child sex abuse scandal continued to be fanned and build in the court of public opinion. The overwhellming sentiment of public opinion was disgust, surprise, indignation, and condemnation. And as details were revealed regarding the extensive time-line of child sexual abuse which stretches back to at least 2000 and with eight identified victims aged between eight to thirteen I became more angry and dismayed that a scandal of such proportions was permitted to exist.

There is more than enough blame at Penn State to share. The athletic department including the Athletic Director, Coach Joe Pa, graduate assistants, security, and staff, as well the the institution itself all are complicit with allowing this travesty to continue in violation of Penn State's policies, safeguards, and legal obligations to protect its students and the community. Their moral disregard for the most vulnerable of us was sanctioned to protect the reputation and brand of this once proud Universtiy.

The ends do not justify the means!

The Board of Trustees has meted out punishment by firing both the President, Graham Spanier and Joe Paterno for not having done the right thing or in Coach Paterno's words not having done enough.

The real tragedy in all of this was the noticable absence of the voices of the innocents. As this cancerous growthcontinuedstalking and abusing young boys, a cone of silence and neglect was allowed to prevail in spite of the knowledge and history of sexual abuse crimes previously committed by Jerry Sandusky. The University, the coach, Joe Pa, owed the victims the humane courtesy of sounding the alarm that a cancer was at work within the body and radical surgery was needed to remove this disease.

And yet benign neglect was the order of the day.

As a coach, a father, hell a human being, I could not nor would not condone these actions and not have forcibly intervened had I witnessed these acts. As coaches we hold a special trust that is involiate.

We have an ethical and moral obligation to protect those too helpless to protect themselves. Isn't that what we do as a country globally? We project our military and economic might to protect or shelter nations to ensure they have an opportunity to grow and prosper. Then why couldn't we do this locally?

Are we too afraid of tarnishing our corporate brand that generates millions of dollars a year or have we just lost the courage to do what is right?

"The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather lack of will." Vince Lombardi

We all should hang our heads in shame and pray for forgiveness. We must actively accept responsibility for the safety and well being of our children and other victims. We must not keep silent and rely soley on due process but take a stand to correct injustice or this firestorm that engulfed Penn State will continue to spread like a canceous wildfire. We must exert our will.
