I happened to come across a news story which simply defies all imagination and you may have heard or seen of it too... a student at New York's Poughkeepsie High school innocently went to school one day only to find that he had to break up a potentially lethal fight between two... TEACHERS!!!
I am a teacher myself and just simply cannot understand what could provoke either of these ladies to sacrifice their careers, their livelihoods, and their lives because of some asinine argument! Yet, it seems quite unfair to blame the argument on both ladies, as only one of them was armed with a screwdriver which she was using to repeatedly strike the other teacher over the head to the point where blood was actually shed.
I have been taught to always give my students high expectations, to settle disagreements peacefully, and to maintain their integrity... and I teach elementary school! With good reason, Justin Richardson, deserves to be proclaimed a hero who remained cool under pressure. Imagine that one day you are simply going to school to learn and play football, only to find that those who should be protecting you instead now need to be protected by you. He stated that it was definitely an "awkward moment for everybody in the school at that point", but that others just seemed to be standing around doing nothing (I'd surmise they had to have been quite dumbfounded) while he chose to jump in and save the teacher who was quite obviously being injured. It became very hard to listen to his interview as he said that the attacking teacher had such rage in her eyes that he didn't even know if that was his teacher at the time, stating "I felt like she wasn't herself... That wasn't my previous teacher; my tenth grade teacher... That... that was unreal. It was mind-boggling. It really was." Other students stood by as the elderly teacher was stabbed multiple times in the head and the neck with the makeshift weapon.
Situations and occurrences like this are bringing a very bad name to the entire profession. This brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "attack on teachers". I think it is probably very hard for most of us to conceive exactly what was going through the mind of this teacher/perpetrator when she attacked the other. They are supposed to be the ladies bravely breaking up a fight in high school instead of engaging in one!!! Smh... sadly...
