Princess Diana And The Gofer

I recently read an article about Princess Diana who tragically died on 31 August 1997 in a road traffic accident in Paris. It is hard to believe it was fifteen years ago, in fact, to this very day. In the article, there was a poll showing that 2% of voters had not even heard of her and 16% had only a vague recollection of her, which I found surprising for someone so admired and an icon of her time.

Though envied by some for her life of luxury, I personally remember her for her beauty and her fervent support of needy causes and charities, especially AIDS/HIV sufferers, the banning of landmines, her support of the homeless, children with leukemia, the British and American Red Cross and many others.

Do you remember 1987 when she held the hand of an HIV sufferer in a London hospital and helped to remove some of the myths about touching AIDS sufferers?

I also have a personal memory of Princess Diana, which came about while at work on a construction site.

A Personal Memory of Princess Diana

Her chauffeur driven limousine approached the roundabout by the construction site compound. She was on her way to open a new ballet school in Camberley in the south of England. A few of us wandered out of the project offices and waited on the grass verge hoping to catch a glimpse of the beautiful princess as she passed by.

Fred the site gofer appeared with an office chair and positioned himself on the grass verge, away from everyone else. Fred was well over 60 years of age and considered himself a bit of a comedian. Despite his age, he had a thick crop of jet-black hair, a very elastic face and could make extraordinary faces. He also liked doing impersonations.

His favorite character to impersonate was Kenny Everett. For those who don’t know, Kenny was a madcap radio DJ and television presenter, considered outrageous by many and regularly in trouble with the broadcasting authorities. Despite a full beard, Kenny would on occasions dress as a woman wearing a large fuzzy blonde wig, false boobs, a purple sequined dress, tights and high heels. He would then proceed to fall about before sitting down and opening and crossing his legs while proclaiming, “it’s all done in the best possible taste”, which at the time became a well-known catchphrase.

Fred decided this was an appropriate time for his Kenny Everett impersonation, but with the addition of a 1-meter high red and white traffic cone on his head.

You’ve guessed it; Princess Diana’s car arrived at the roundabout and although escorted by police the car had to stop. Princess Diana was in the rear seat of the car by the nearside window. She turned to see Fred in full flow, opening and crossing his legs and pulling faces (not at the princess I might add). He suddenly realized that Princess Diana was actually there in the flesh and looking straight at him. He stopped his antics rather abruptly.

We all expected her to turn the other cheek and ignore him, but instead she burst out laughing. She waved at Fred with a broad grin (ignoring the rest of us), and moments later she was gone.

She made a fan for life in Fred that day and no doubt went on to charm everyone else she met while opening the local ballet school. Sadly, these three big personalities from completely different backgrounds and lifestyles are no longer with us. Do you remember the people’s princess?

Yes I remember her and how sad it was back then in 1997. I remember Kenny Everett too. We had his television comedy shows here in Australia, what a character. Thanks for your entertaining article:)

Many thanks for your comments Rob. The public out pouring of grief was quite amazing at the time. I wondered how many people would know and/or remember Kenny Everett - he certainly was a character.

How well we do... a loss for the whole world... she was an ambassador of so many good things and if nothing else she gave England a good name... which is, thank the Lord carried on by her Sons, who at least show they are human and enjoy life as well, not like their Father.... she's sorely missed by all the world and will remain in our memories for ever...

Thanks Rob. She was a very special person to so many people, and her sons appear to have inherited so many of her qualities and zest for life.

Yes, I remember the people's princess! And I enjoyed your article. Thank you;) Oooh. And it looks like her daughter-in-law's going to be able to handle THAT role quite well. The people's princess indeed.

Thanks Cynthia. I was in two minds whether or not to submit this article as it may not be of interest to many, but it is a true story. Yes, I think your right about Kate Middleton - she looks very much at home in her new position in life.

Antique Dealers Shouldn’t Be Snobbish
