The Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge\'s Hollow Court Victory

When the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge embarked on their Royal Tour of South East Asia and South Pacific on behalf of the Queen they must have thought that most of the publicity would be about what Kate was wearing. Ironically of course the focus has been on what she wasn’t wearing on a recent private holiday in France when she decided to sunbathe topless on a balcony and the subsequent decision by the couple to take legal action in a French Court. This has been a pity because the tour has clearly been a huge success as the royal couple have captivated their hosts at every stop with their natural charm and interest.

However, today the French lawyers who were acting on behalf of the couple won an injunction to stop further publication or selling of the pictures from the French magazine Closer. The magazine has also been told to hand over copies of the pictures. Although this is clearly a victory for the couple and shows that they will be prepared to sue if they consider their privacy invaded, it’s really only symbolic as the pictures have already been widely distributed and are available to anyone who has access to the internet. Nor will the victory deter the paparazzi or magazine editors in the future.

Although there has been sympathy for the royal couple, opinion among some of the commentators has been critical that Kate even considered sunbathing topless when she must understand that there are people who would go to almost any lengths to get pictures of her. Naive perhaps but clearly Prince William who is no lover of the press since the death of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales and is ultra cautious must have considered the situation safe or it would never have happened. And now sadly they’ve realised that they’re not.

But for me the most fascinating aspect of the whole story is not that the Duchess chose to sunbathe topless, but why some people have such a prurient interest in the minutiae of the lives of other people. Personally I can see no fascination in looking at photographs of another person sunbathing on a balcony whether it be the Duchess of Cambridge, a famous movie star, a famous singer or members of my immediate family! It’s just dull.

Although I know there are plenty of people who share my disinterest there are clearly many who feel otherwise. It’s been reported that copies of French Closer were doing a roaring trade on the UK version of Ebay, though a spokesman for the site have since said they are removing the items following complaints. French Closer published the pictures because they knew that although they were breaching the country’s privacy laws they knew that there would be a market for them as did the editor of the Irish Daily Star and Italy's Chi magazine.

So the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge may have won their legal battle, but at the end of the day it’s a hollow victory. The genie is well and truly out of the bottle and it cannot be pushed back. It seems that from Z list to A list there is nothing about people’s lives that is off limits. How sad is that?!

Street Talk

How sad is that, very sad...it always has amazed me the fascination others have in others daily lives, and they have never met them...why do they care?? Sad but true and will it stop not likely if there is money involved and there is here, the public sucks this crap up...how sad is that very sad...if they spent half as much time on their own lives as they spend followiing others.....well they might enjoy life a bit and make their own story's.....good article Beverley....

Thanks Tim - It is desperately sad, but it seems many people enjoy this kind of vicarious experience.

The fact that people in the press industry are so motivated to get these kind of pictures of private moments speaks loudly about the widespread inappropriate interest of many people to look at these pictures if they are available to look at. I find myself mildly interested in seeking out the photo. I'm a man after all and men are generally interested in the anatomy of women. However it's possible for us men to exercise self control and decide not to search for and look at this image and all other similar images. I think if we don't agree with this practice of the press then we shouldn't look at the results of their spying work. If none of us looked then there wouldn't be any value in these images for them. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge come across as confident genuine people who care about their place in society and desire to care for the interests of others. If we respect them, as we do, then why would we want to show disrespect by joining in and viewing what was supposed to be their own personal and private moments? Nice article Beverley, I enjoyed reading from you:)

Thanks Rob for taking the time to comment. It would be better if people wouldn't buy the images - but unfortunately I can't see that happening.

It must be hard to live in the spot light 24/7. I think they are a great couple who have brought interest in the Royal family back to a younger generation. It is a hollow victory though, they should be able to have a holiday in private.
