Top 5 Bus Driver Pet Peeves

1. Rude Passengers - For heaven’s sake passengers, would it kill you to to be pleasant? I’m not asking you - and you know who you are - to grin from ear to ear and ask me to explain how great my day is! Just be polite to not only drivers, but also your fellow transit riders. A little acknowledgement and eye contact could go a long way. I don’t care if you have a bad day, don’t take it out on others!

2. Bad Drivers - This applies to not only the general public commandeering their vehicles around in wreckless and negligent ways, but also to fellow bus operators who slam on brakes, don’t wait for elderly to sit down before punching the gas pedal, and who tailgate. Of note, operators pay close attention to out of town license plates due to potential unsafe and sudden manoeuvres because of unfamiliarity with the roads and locations.

3. Bad Cyclists - To those on bicycles who feel a sense of entitlement, even when riding in bike/automobile share lanes, to perform dangerous cutting off of buses, racing around buses as they depart bus stops, and even riding in the entire centre of a lane just to slow down transit buses, I say, not too bright as we outweigh you by at least thirty thousand pounds!

A word of advice bad cyclists, when approaching a bus that has just stopped at a bus stop, common sense should dictate to you that you either pass the bus before it opens its doors to let passengers offload, or, you stop to let passengers off. Either way, don’t just roll by and risk injuring yourself or others.

4. Pedestrians - Take off those bloody headsets! Studies have shown that over 90% of pedestrian traffic fatalities are the fault of... Pedestrians! It should come as no surprise when you witness absolute idiocy and ignorance displayed by pedestrians.

Stop daring vehicles to hit you when you intentionally walk on Do Not Walk signals. Or, when you intentionally slow down your pace in the crosswalk. One day, you might get what you deserve by an unknowing driver who actually didn’t notice you, or misjudged your intentions and runs into you!

For those who think it cool to stand on the edge of the curb while a bus comes into the stop, or, for those who stand with their toes - therefore, their nose - hanging over the curb as a bus drives by, you’re fair game if you get cracked by that right-side mirror!

5. “Runners” - I don’t mean those actual people running for exercise. I mean those who find it fitting to run up alongside buses hammering their fists against the sides while the bus is moving. You should be aware that even if a driver has seen you in his or her side view mirror, and you know he or she has seen you, it is not safe for a driver to stop after they have left a stop. It is simply not safe to do so.

A vehicle coming up from behind the departing bus could hit the bus from behind if that bus suddenly stops for you. A passenger on the bus, could fall if the bus suddenly stops for you. You may even trip or fall, causing your own injury, when you attempt to board the bus perhaps several feet away from the curb. Heaven forbid you catch your clothing on the side of the bus and it drags you down the road!

Remember too that operators attempt to keep to a tight schedule. We cannot stop for every runner or we will be off schedule and those passengers that were on time to catch the bus will be inconvenienced.

Of course there are plenty more peeves I could include, but in my mind, these are consensus top picks. All of these issues can clearly be avoided and solved were it not for the immature and just plain moronic actions of a few bad apples.

Be Careful Out There!
