What America Have You Been Living In?

What’s with all this hate-speech from the Republican candidates? They want to undo our acceptance of gays in the military? They want to overturn Roe v. Wade and take away a woman’s right to choose? They want to destroy the labor unions? Declare that separation of church and state isn’t the American way!?

How far are they willing to go with this destruction of our social progress? Perhaps they not only want gays out of the military, but women as well, or even re-segregate the armed forces into black and white again. Gingrich has even gone so far as to suggest repealing child labor laws. Maybe they want to return to the exclusion of women from the workplace—or, at least, the paying-more-than-minimum-wage workplace, that is.

They got away with cancelling our civil rights ‘in defense against terrorism’, they’re managing to keep the rich protected from the mistakes caused by their own greed—and they’ve stifled the outcry for financial reform by pointing to the terrible economy—which they created. They don’t want illegals crossing our borders—but they still hire illegals to do the work Americans find too back-breaking or too demeaning.

This is one of those times—we’ve had them before—when our country could easily side-step its way into a ‘bizarro-world’ version of the real America. Did you know about the American Bund? These were pro-Nazi Americans who felt that we should enter WWII as allies of Hitler—and, make no mistake, they had a shot, for a while. England, too, had its Nazi sympathizers who wanted to ally themselves with Germany. Fascism had the same attraction then that capitalism has now—it erases all those messy feelings that people have—and replaces them with spreadsheet analysis and accounting ledgers.

Digital globalization is a new and powerful tool for the wealthy to remake the planet to their own specifications—and they are so good at misdirection. Their media coverage always follows the spin patterns their advisors toss for them—and we feel engaged in policy when we are only engaged in digesting the pablum the wealthy feed us. We are well-informed about the latest Kardashian wedding, but we never hear about the climatology report released that same week showing serious cause for concern over rising CO2 levels in our atmosphere

Worst of all, today’s Republicans want to ‘christianize’ our nation—they want to destroy the keystone of our freedom as individuals—the right to worship as we please, regardless of any and every fundamentalist yahoo with access to TV coverage. A ‘christian’ America would be as much an affront to Israel as it would be to the world’s largest religion, Islam—do we really want to add to the separation the rest of the world sees between us and them? I think we should be careful to hang on to this most American and most precious of our civil rights—our freedom to tell a preacher to go sell it to someone else.

And I am still waiting for someone to be outraged about the Patriot Act—a piece of legislation that hides its shameless un-Americanism behind that sacred word—the terrorists’ greatest victory still stands: we accept the loss of our civil rights as regards the protection of accused persons’ rights until they have been tried by our judicial system. And why? Because of terror. I am not afraid—let’em come! I’d rather be blown to hell by some misguided teenager than watch our country knuckle under to the fear-mongering that pervaded Bush-W’s administration and persists in Obama’s. The longer we wait to abolish the Patriot Act, the longer we allow ourselves to get used to a police state.

Up until now, Conservatives confined themselves to resisting change and protecting the wealthy because they think the ‘business of America is business’. But now, they’ve crossed a line—now they actually want to turn back time—to regress the USA to a more narrow-minded, repressed time. It boggles the mind! Perhaps it’s because more freedom for the people means less freedom for the self-entitled to abuse the working class. Or maybe we’re all going crazy because of the unprecedented speed of change in our daily lives—and this ‘regressing back to the 50s’ schtick is just the natural reaction of the conservative mind-set. After all, it’s difficult for even a progressive like myself to deal with the blurring chaos that modern times have become—what must these old conservatives be going through, having stepped onto a conveyor belt of non-stop re-arranging of the socio-political landscape.

But if they don’t think that acceptance of homosexuality is a step forward—if they think that it is a mistake that just slipped by in all the confusion—they had better take a closer look. We have had patriarchal leaders in the past who felt that kissing in public, or women daring to show a little ankle, or girls leaving the house without hats and gloves—that any of these things, in their day, would be the end of civilized society. And yet Society has weathered, to date, bikinis, mini-skirts, nose-rings, and Victoria’s Secret—all without permanent harm to our psyches. As a rule of thumb, one may assume that any conservative will dislike the most recent attitudes of women, will long for the earlier attitudes, and will condemn any actually new changes as the death knell of civilization.

Of course, Republicans such as Gingrich, Bachmann, and Perry may not be deluded at all—it is possible that they are simply egotistical power-mongers—in which case, I’d say they were perfect representatives of the Republican Party.

Street Talk

Put another nail in that Republican coffin. So out of touch with reality, their as good as dead anyway. I know this was from 2011, but still valid and invigorating points you make -well done.
