Although I do not regularly attend church, I do believe in God. I also recognize the social value of the teachings of the Bible such as The 10 Commandments and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Teaching the precepts of religion to young Americans forms their character and prepares them to thrive and survive in American society. Without heeding these teachings, our youth will bring about the decline of the greatest country in the history of the world—The United States of America.
Our Founding Fathers recognized the need for Americans to practice religious teachings. They understood that following these teachings would strengthen American society and allow our Constitution to function at its best for all Americans. The Constitution was designed with Americans following religious teachings in mind. I believe that government should allow God back into our lives and in the public. Thomas Jefferson composed the phrase, “separation of church and state.” He intended to say that government would not recognize only one branch of one religion preferentially. He did not mean to exclude God and religion from our government and public events.
Around 1962 the U.S. Supreme Court changed its definition of the word “church” to mean a religious public gathering. This fundamentally changed the meaning of Jefferson’s words in the Court’s eyes. It no longer saw that government would not preferentially recognize a single branch of one religion, but that government could not constitutionally allow God or religion into its dealings, or public dealings. This change in the definition of the word “church” has led to removing prayer from public schools, not permitting Nativity scenes at public buildings, and questioning whether prayer at the start of public meetings should be permitted. These examples are deemed or challenged as unconstitutional. Ironically, the words, “separation of church and state,” do not appear in the Constitution. Americans enjoy freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.
Early in his presidency Barack Obama said that America was no longer a Christian nation, but rather a nation of people of many religions and beliefs. I can respect this statement, so long as it does not serve to restrict the beliefs of the many to satisfy the wants of a few. Most Americans believe in a God and a religion. Less than 20% of Americans are atheists, agnostics, or practice no religion. We believers must not allow the few non-believers to dictate the exclusion of God from our society, using government to hold religion at bay inside the grounds and walls of churches.
Our government needs Americans to practice religion. The government depends on the Constitution to serve as the framework of our society. The Constitution depends on the moral behavior of Americans so that its components will function as designed. Therefore, the government depends on religion to teach Americans the morals they need for society to function. Without religious teachings and moral behavior the government will fail, leading to the downfall of American society.
We owe it to our children. We must bring God back into American society to ensure the future of America for Americans to come.
