Best Way to Stop Smoking is Not to Set A New Years Resolution

Stepping into the gym the day after New Year’s and noticed an overwhelming amount of people waiting in line from treadmills to weight benches. Just a few weeks ago, there were not nearly half as many people here after rush hour. It must be that time again when people are setting New Year resolutions. Been hearing all kinds of resolutions being made such as: this year I'm going to start going to start a new gym program and stick with it... this year I'm going to stop smoking cigarettes and stay off it... this year I'm going to start saving more money and keep my money... these are only a few examples of common resolutions. Don't get me wrong, these are all very good positive goals to start the year fresh and be good. Only problem was, you probably made the same resolution last year... and the year before that.

The reality of resolutions usually started the year before and you decided to splurge one day and told yourself, "don't worry, once the New Year is here, I'll make a plan and promise I'll stick to it, no matter what". So you get fired up about going to the gym and new exercise program you saw on TV. You woke up feeling good after count down day and head to the gym to do what you promised. It was hard, but it felt great afterwards. As the week went by, you managed to stick to your program and feel really good about it.

The next week you continue to stick to your program, but had extra work to take care of so you said, “since you've been doing such a good job, its OK if I just miss one out of three days this week”. The next week you’re still sore from your workout program as your body is still getting used to the routine. So you push through your first work out and sweat through it. On day two, working late and feeling sore, you made a small excuse saying you could use a break, you'll just work harder the next workout day. The weekend comes, and it's your friend's birthday you can't miss. You skip the workout and go out with your friends.

Most people never really make it all the way to the end of the month with their program. It's easy to get fired up into a program, and slowly let daily life habits interfere with the goals. When that happens, it's easy to fall back into a habit of making excuses again and falling off the wagon.What you could have made was not a new year’s resolution, but a lifestyle change. A lifestyle change is something that you do out of your daily habits for the rest of your life. It does sound pretty hard to do but it can be done. If you want to change your life by doing something different, you must do it for a total of 30 days without cheating.

Whether it is sticking to workout program, stop smoking, or save more money, you must continue to keep at it. This goes for missing that one workout day, having that one cigarette during break, or splurging half of your paycheck on a birthday party - you must stick to your goals! Making a decision to start fresh and do well was probably one of the best decisions you made all year, but you have to change your habits in order to change your lifestyle.
