Easiest Way: Quit Smoking

We always want to know what is the easiest way to do things. There are websites dedicated to this sort of search. Easiest way: earn money, easiest way: pass university, easiest way: find a job and this article is about the easiest way: quit smoking.

Firstly, why do people search for an easy way to stop smoking? Why not just stop smoking and let it be? The answer is because we all perceive smoking to be one of the hardest things to quit, and that giving it up will be the most difficult thing we ever attempt to do, and many of us never succeed.

We are conditioned throughout our lives, even before we start smoking, to believe that smoking is something very difficult to give up. I remember growing up thinking "If I ever start smoking I will never stop" (of course, in later years I forgot that and went through the experimental stages like most people do) and so even before my first attempt to quit I was dreading it and thinking it was going to be impossible. My brain was jumping through hoops and making me think that I didn't even want to quit after all.

Actually though, the fear of quitting is what makes quitting hard. By the time someone does eventually get around to quitting, they have already decided it is going to be very difficult, and they have pretty much set themselves up to fail. For whatever reason, they will ultimately start smoking again. Then they turn to google and type in "easiest way quit smoking," in an effort to make it less painful the next time around (however long in the future that may be)

This leads me onto what I believe is the easiest way to quit smoking, based on my own experiences with failure and eventual success (in a very easy manner). The truth is, if somebody can learn to understand that fear and learn how they are addicted to nicotine and nothing else, they can find quitting very easy.

I did lots of online research before I eventually quit and some of it prepared me well, some of it didn't prepare me at all, but what eventually led to me quitting easily was understanding the smoking trap and dispelling many of the myths about smoking that I had believed to be true (the first of these was that smoking is difficult to give up, in the end it was as difficult as learning to drive on the other side of the road when moving country)

Now don't get me wrong. You DO need to find the easiest way. Quit smoking gadgets, patches, or gums are all designed to make it easier but they are not the easiest. Why?

That is simple. Nicotine addiction only takes 3 days to get over. Maybe a little longer, but the worst will be gone by 3 days. The real problem with smoking is the mental reliance and the belief that smoking is hard to quit. Therefore, the easiest way to quit is to understand that smoking does nothing for you. This takes a bit of time to accept, so I will say it again. Smoking does nothing for you. It is just a chemical addiction that has led you to believe that you enjoy smoking.

Think about it, sometimes you smoke when you are stressed, other times you smoke when you need to concentrate, other times you smoke when you need to relax, more times you smoke when you need energy. How can a cigarette perform all these things for you? It can't. What happens is this, you feel stressed, and you are also uncomfortable because you need nicotine, so you smoke and the nicotine craving goes away, you feel better, and you think that the stress has got better, actually it didn't. The same works for all the aforementioned situations.

The physical cravings of nicotine are so small that you don't even notice them (they aren't even big enough to wake you up while you sleep) and therefore when a cigarette ends the craving and you feel better, you associate it with something else, such as enjoyment, stress-relief, relaxation, concentration, or whatever.

Non-smokers don't have problems dealing with stress/concentration/relaxation without cigarettes, so smokers shouldn't either.

This might be a new concept for you or something that is difficult to understand, so I suggest you to do some more research, and really think about cigarettes. Next time you smoke one, ask yourself how it is really making you feel. Read some other articles, and accept that the easiest way to quit smoking is simply to quit smoking.

If you have tried other methods before, and you have even tried cold-turkey before and failed, then you can try this instead:

Understand that all the times you thought you enjoyed smoking or needed it as some form of clutch, it was just in your head. You must then simply embrace the fact that you only have to defeat a small chemical addiction to cigarettes, and you will be free. If you can do that, then you have found the easiest way. Quit smoking with ease.
