How I Quit Smoking

There are so many different ways to quit smoking, how do we know which is the best way? Quit smoking websites are all over the Internet now and most of them offer similar generic advice. I often wonder whether that advice has any substance to it, does it really work? I know that people can stop smoking after reading these tips and websites, but have they quit because of the website, or in spite of it?

Here is a brief overview of some of the most common ways people use:

  • Willpower Method
  • Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)
  • Cutting Down
  • Hypnotism
  • Aversion Therapy
  • Tablets

I had experience with the first three before I found the best way. Here are some of my thoughts based on those experiences.

Willpower method: I think this is the most difficult way to stop. It gives you the belief that smoking is very hard to quit and that you are giving up a prized clutch/vice, actually I later found out this is not true. I failed on this method so many times it lead me to think that I was weak willed. But if I was in control of every other aspect of my life, why was smoking in control of me?

Nicotine Replacement Therapy: This is things like, patches, chewing gum, inhalers, I tried them all at various different times, all they made me do was miss smoking. They just reinforced the fact that smoking was something I enjoyed and needed, how was I going to quit when constantly being reminded about smoking? Also, I found the gum really upset my stomach and the inhaler was just a waste of time.

Cutting down: I made good progress with this at first but in the end I found several flaws with this method. Firstly, I was always wishing away the time between cigarettes, secondly, I spent all day thinking about cigarettes. It seemed that cutting me down was causing me more stress than just smoking however many I wanted, and I was still smoking 5-10 a day, not exactly improving my health.

I've not personally tried the other methods and they work for some people it's true but probably fail for others. The method I ended up using was much more simple, didn't require any work except reading and thinking for a week or two, and has kept me off cigarettes for over a year, so for me it is the best quit smoking way.

First I had to understand the reasons that I had for smoking, I had to know how the smoking trap works, so that I could understand how to get out of it. Smokers already know why they shouldn't smoke but I think knowing why they REALLY smoke is a mystery to most, it certainly was for me. I remember thinking "I best quit smoking" way too many times but then five minutes later I would be smoking again.

If you take the time to learn more about the smoking trap itself, you will be better prepared to beat it. Know your enemy !
