In a world that used to think smoking was cool and the thing to do, change is taking place. One statistic we should all be happy about is that what was one the majority is now the minority.
Smokers only account for about twenty percent of the nation today, but we can do way better! Will it be easy? I have found in researching smoking there are many ways to stop smoking, but the easy way to stop smoking really does not exist.
Why Stop?
What was once thought of as cool is responsible for causing heart disease, high blood pressure, yellow teeth, bad breath, emphysema, strokes, cancer and much more. After watching my mother, who was a pretty heavy smoker most of her life, die from lung cancer all I can say is stop now, and you will increase your chances of not following in her path. You will feel better, look better, smell better, and live longer. Pretty good trade off!
What can I do?
There are many ways to help you with this quest. I have found after talking to many ex smokers that being armed with the proper information is the first step. Having a support system in place and a plan of action is a must. Your body will go through withdrawals as well as your mind, and having support in place will give you a place to turn to when all else seems to be failing, The most important thing is do not give up! When you feel you can not go on and must have a cigarette, redirect your thoughts, take a walk, grab a book, whatever it takes to get past the urge. Remember, these things kill people, and you do not want to be on that list anymore
How long will it take?
Quitting smoking is something you will be dealing with for the rest of your life, but don't sweat it, it will get easier with time. The first three weeks are the hardest, as the body has to withdraw from all the chemicals that are in tobacco, and there are a lot of them. I found exercise helped, along with constant support. Think of it this way, instead of constantly poisoning your body, now you are going to be doing healthy things.
Is there any help out there?
More than you can imagine. I did some research and found may different smoking aids for quitting. I am happy to say if you really want to quit, and you have had enough of throwing away your money, there is no better time than now to stop smoking!

As a former smoker I have to say that it is difficult but with the right information all it takes is a decision
To start smoking was the dumbest thing I ever did. To quit was no doubt the smartest move ever.
I think, Shawn...determination and self-control has a big part of it to quit smoking.
Shawn, this is an interesting article. I learnt about quit smoking programs during hypnotherapy training. It was the opinion of the trainer that the body is actually addicted to breathing (not smoking). Puffing a cigarette if the vehicle that causes people to fight for air and ironically work to suck it into their lungs. When they quit they no longer have the tool and (apparently) deep breathing can pull them over the hump of needing the next cigarette. Having never been a smoker (or worked with anyone who is) I have no clue if this is true and would be interested in your take on the concept. I definitely think, like many 'addictions' the person quitting has to have a good motivation and want it for themselves.
Good article Shawn, not an easy thing to do as you say, I have tried many times during my long smoking career, but fall off the wagon every time. I gave up drinking because I was an alkie and saw what harm it was doing, But visits to Dr. for a check up prove my lungs still good, ten years younger than me actually according to the Dr. But i agree it is now just a habit and I wish I could give up, just need a reason to convince the brain.
