Many smokers say that they continue to smoke because the act of smoking helps them relieve stress in their life. Therefore, it make common sense that one of the major part of stopping smoking is learning how to manage your stress levels, which in theory ought to go UP if you are right about smoking helps relieve stress. In short, learning how to effectively manage stress goes hand in hand with giving up smoking.
So, the first aspect of this quitting smoking process is to analyse your life and find out what things stress you the most. Is it your job? Are you having problems with the type of work in the office ? Having difficulty getting along with the boss? If the answer is yes, then you have identified your job as the stress. Perhaps it is lack of money? Most people have money problems that cause them a lot of stress. Or perhaps it is relationship problems? Problems associated with love and relationships can lead to high amount of stress and unhappiness among couples and families.
Once you realize what it is 'that makes you stress until you have to smoke to relieve it', you have to learn how to overcome the stress to enable you to quit smoking later. Here are some things that you can do :
If your job is getting you stressed, why not switch jobs or try looking for a job in the company that you are able to do and that you want to do. If the lack of money is giving you the stress, find alternative ways to increase your income - some ideas could be a part-time job or studying for higher education that enable you to get a higher paying job later. If it is a troubling relationship that is the cause of stress, analyse what is wrong, try to repair it and switch to someone new if the relationship cannot work.
Lastly, the stress could just be not taking enough time out to relax and enjoy life. There are some ways of doing this. Find an interesting and healthy hobby or two. The hobby could be anything from gardening to fishing and photography. In fact, anything that you have always wanted to do, but never had time for before.

If you are trying to reduce stress by smoking, it is not the best way to do it. Smoking will lead to serious health problems in life and increases stress for you. One possible solution is enrolling yourself in a quit smoking program that helps you to quit smoking by effectively managing 'stress' the proper way and de-linking the act of smoking to reducing stress.

Serena, I'm really concerned about what smoking does to the environment and people around especially third hand smoke. I come from a country where the smoking rate is very high so it is a major concern here. Thanks for reading the article and commenting.

Funny because most people I know who smoke become almost bipolar about it. If they have a smoke they are all mellow but if they go just one day without, they`re always looking to pick a fight. Btw spotted a couple typos here and there, mostly near the beginning.
Eugene this is a great article although I do not smoke stress actually causes myself and many others to develop and keep bad habits as a means of trying to cope with it. I really liked the ways you suggested to help with the problem and the fact that it was not a you have to stop right now. But more of a lets change this issue so we can address the smoking issue.
