Before I quit smoking I had seen so many websites offering tips on how to stop smoking that differed wildly in opinion and recommendations, it sometimes made me wonder whether there was any substance to those tips or whether they were just written by somebody who hadn't actually quit smoking for themselves.
I hesitated before writing my own tips on how to stop smoking, simply because I came to the conclusion that everyone has their own success stories and it will be difficult to assemble some widely useful tips on how to stop. Smoking appeals to different people for different reasons, but there are enough smoking traits shared by every smoker that made me decide to offer my two cents.
So, without further ado, I present my top five tips on how to stop smoking.
1.) Understand why you smoke: Is it because you want to concentrate, to relax, to have energy, to calm down? All of the above are cited by smokers as reasons for smoking, how can a cigarette help you focus and relax ? relax and have energy? The truth is, you smoke because you are addicted.
2.) Realize that you don't enjoy the taste: Many smokers say they enjoy the taste, I definitely used to think that, but let me ask you, if you run out of cigarettes and the only ones available are a different brand, with a flavor you hate, do you still smoke them?
3.) Focus on the positives of quitting not the negatives of continuing: What I mean by this is, don't think about how bad cigarettes are for you and how expensive they are and so forth, instead think about how great it will be to be free from the addiction. This is one of the best tips on how to stop smoking that I ever encountered in my own efforts for quitting.
4.) Research the nicotine trap and how exactly nicotine affects your body: It is surprising to learn exactly how nicotine works and how easy it can be to quit if you dispel many of the myths about smoking.
5.) There is no such thing as just one cigarette: No matter how tempted you are, don't smoke again after you quit, don't have "just one" at a party to prove that you are free. There's no such thing as just one. It is an addiction and just one is enough to start the cycle again.
There you have it, you might find that my tips are different from other tips on how to stop smoking. That is because I am sure you have already read them and are aware of them, I wanted to provide a fresh set of tips for you. You never know how a different take on quitting smoking will affect your success.
hi dom i quit smoking 25 yrs ago and haven't looked back - i don't know why it was so easy for me but i know the realization that i was an athlete and smoking was not consistent with the regimen i was following certainly had something to do with it - the realization is that smoking is a horrible addiction and people do need to focus on the negative effects to your health as well as the positive effects quitting will have
thanks for letting me know, I think you are right that we at least need to consider the negative affects, but 99% of us are aware of the negative affects already and still continue to smoke, so my point is that it is better to feel positive. For me, whenever I thought about the negatives it just made me stressed and want to smoke more!
Great article. Need to add number 6. You have been chumped out by big tobacco companies who have laced their product with extremely addictive chemicals to make sure you keep coming back regardless of the health risks. Think about it. Your money is sending one of their top executives kids to college. That make it easier to quit? :)
