With the power of the tobacco industry lined-up against us, using their very clever advertising and marketing, we need all the skill and knowledge we can get to beat them and succeed with whatever way to stop smoking we have selected.

When we add to this the power of the drug - nicotine - itself, we have some extremely serious enemies to overcome. By the power of the drug, I mean its addictive properties; such addiction can be both physical and mental and can affect people in so many different ways.

No wonder the tobacco producers and distributors have been so profitable for so long, so will fight hard to keep as many of us in their thrall as possible. This all means that even when you have decided conclusively that you will stop smoking cigarettes, you are very unlikely to get an easy ride.

This is exactly why we need to be able to call on every possible weapon in our armory, to help win this battle as quickly and easily as possible. Because I would rank this problem alongside any other major difficulty we might face in life, I seriously believe that it would be a mistake to ignore the spiritual aspect of what is going on, regarding smoking and everything else in our lives.

I think that this next idea is among the most powerful and effective I have ever heard, so I will do my best to explain it accurately. Like many people, I am a keen student of personal growth principles and have studied with a number of those I consider leaders in the field. A story was related of a student who asked an Indian spritual guru the question 'master, what should I do to help me to stop smoking?'

The answer was very unexpected as well as very short and simple; the master said 'smoke - consciously'.

Wow! What on earth could that mean? He asked the master about stopping smoking and was advised to 'smoke'. But the key of course is the second word 'consciously'.

By this the master meant for the student to be totally aware and 'in the moment' when inhaling poisonous gases into the breathing system. It is based on the accepted wisdom, that once we become totally conscious of exactly what we are doing and why, then it will be less easy to do anything at all which is harmful. In fact once taken to its logical conclusion, it will become totally impossible to deliberately do things which do not move our life in the direction which we really want to go.

While the idea itself is simple, even once it is fully understood, it is not necessarily going to be easy to follow. That being said, once our mind - particularly the sub-conscious mind - is on the case, then it will make implementing ways to stop smoking, like any other objective, easier to achieve.

All advisers and coaches will emphasise that whatever we are trying to achieve, whether it is doing something, or stopping doing something - like quitting smoking, the one thing we will need is persistence. It might not work at once, but keep trying and it will.
